Defense, on the line especially, we seem to have guys more suited for the 4-3 (decent sized linemen) defense over the 3-4 (which requires huge d-linemen), but the Tampa 2 defense, even with the right guys at the FBS level, tends to get exposed badly. It's not a bad concept, in that it is simple in how its run and ideally, you have linebackers that can cover recievers and slightly undersized d-linemen that can fill in gaps and get good push, but in practice, look what happened to teams that tried to run it. Nebraska, they beat us because of our usual 3rd quarter let down, but gave up 600+ yards and 30+ points to our offense. Nevada, their defense was one of the few worse than ours. Enough said there. And Hawaii. Yeah, put up 50+ points and nearly 800 yards of offense on them. I know, they were horrible, but still.
So yeah, some pretty big concerns about the Tampa 2 defense.
Offense, well, its going to be a rough transition the next couple years period. And we'll see if DC could recruit o-linemen, but just couldn't coach them, or they were not very good to begin with. We still have no fullbacks, though converting a linebacker into a FB is not out of the realm of possibility, as FBs are basically LBs for the offense (job is to hit people after all). We have 2 TEs, one who can block but can't catch, and one who can catch but can't block. And lastly, for QB, we have on roster right now, a walk on and a kid who played in mop up duty, usually when we were getting blown out. We do have a kid who was a QB before coming here and a Wyoming kid who'll be here by Fall Camp (unless he graduated early?), but is completely unknown how he'll do in this system.
One thing is for sure, Bohl has his work cut out for him.
