Signing Day / Transfer Portal

Beginning next year - teams can directly pay players up to about an aggregate of $23 million for football yearly.

I bet Notre Dame pays the max. What do you think the 2nd string safety will get out of that $23 million? Remember, there are only 105 players total to be paid which equals an average of $219,000 per player.
I don't think many schools will be close to that max 23 million. I suppose it's possible that Notre Dame could be one of them.

I would think like $20K for a backup DB.

You have no idea about the crazed and loaded pockets fanbase of some programs. Dont be surprised when teams like SMU, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, etc. are easily funding the MAX.

The only question will be how much additional dollars go into private NIL over and above the $23 million school payment cap.

PS - backup DBs at Boise State are rumored to get more than your $20,000 very low figure.

eeehhhh I'll need to see proof of this one

A NFL practice squad player makes what, $200k a year. You're trying to tell me college back ups at non-glamour positions are approaching this? Come on.

There was an entire discussion on the MWC Board last year about the Boise collective and the NIL funds being infused into their program. The topic started after Boise kept Jeanty and brought in former 5 star QB Malachi Nelson.

We aren’t even in the same league as Boise when looking at NIL dollars.

Yes. NFL has a salary cap and salaries are paid by ownership.

College has no salary cap and salaries are largely paid by the fanbase. Phil Knight has publicly stated he will pay as much money as it takes to win a championship at Oregon.

In case you missed it https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...ational-title-hes-gonna-help-me-make-my-shoe/

Why would any player ever go pro early if this is the case?
They wouldn’t unless they are guaranteed to go in the first 2 rounds!!! This is exactly why you are seeing more players stick in college now. The money is better for the vast majority of players to stay in college.

A high school kid from Michigan just signed a $10.5 million 4 year NIl deal. This is basically the same salary as the top pick in the second round of the draft with the average 4 year deal for a 2nd rounder being $9 million. Brock Purdy signed a 4 year deal at $3.3 million.

Well, the education part is basically irrelevant for most athletes, and I guess we'll see about second string former walk ons getting paid 100k
This is completely false....It's the opposite of true. The vast majority of athletes will make far more money related to whatever their careers are after their playing careers are over. This could be changing for the subset of athletes that make the top end of NIL dollars....but I bet that group is going on to a pro career anyways.

Exactly!

We criticize the Wyoming player when they go somewhere else but praise the Colorado or Texas player when they come here.
I agree that when there are significant amounts of money involved it clouds things, but if it were a vacuum I think Wyoming and most states are significantly different when it comes to leaving the state to play collegiate sports. We have one DI school. Texas has how many? As a kid growing up here, you're a UW fan first unless your parents deliberately steered you elsewhere. Theres something different about that. Tx or CO or most other states don't have one team that the whole state gets behind.
Put another way, its not uncommon that I tell people in Lubbock that the only place where people have more state pride than in Texas is Wyoming.

Oh yeah, how many elite athletes are choosing their school based off education? How many d-1 football players are majoring in communications or ———- studies?

This take and your incredulity about how much $$ is going to football NIL surprises me...how are you this naive about this stuff? I'm actually kind of impressed.

There was some debate last year as to whether Caleb Williams would stay at USC for 1 more year or declare for the draft. There were rumors he would have made over $10 million for 1 year, which he considered as he originally wasn't too excited about going to Chicago.
