Larry Shyatt went off about the future of the MWC tourney: http://trib.com/sports/college/wyoming/mbb/larry-shyatt-critical-of-mountain-west-s-plans-for-future/article_dbc32005-5935-55da-8353-ac8b268dc85f.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sounds like he's going to make an additional statement Monday morning on behalf of league coaches.

This was an interesting tidbit buried near the bottom.

In addition to the league keeping its tournament at Thomas & Mack, the event will be whittled down to eight teams beginning in 2017.

I love shyatt as a coach for UW. So I'd like to defend him on anything. But the reality is that he exists and NCAA sports exist for and because of the fans. The fans of MW west teams- maybe we should just talk about the fans of Wyoming. We want the conference tournament to be in Las Vegas, right? So there might be a competitive advantage for unlv. So what?

I remember when Shawn Bradley and Luke Langley and UTEP and all the rest played the conference tourney in Laramie. That was awesome. Wish it happened every year. But it can't. And I'll never go to Logan Utah, Fort Collins, colon springs, Boise Idaho, or half the other shithole towns in the mw. Just like most others would think about the tourney in Laramie. It would be cool if it could rotate between Vegas, San Diego, Honolulu, and Reno- but that's not fair either is it?

Someday half the conferences in the country will have their tourneys in Vegas. So the mw happened to be ahead of the curve here. Oh cry about its all about money? Of course it's about money that's why you're here Larry

I didn't get the sense Shy was mad it's in Vegas, he's pissy that it's at a MWC members home gym....

Agreed, I don't think Vegas is the issue for him. (Even if it were, there's no point in crabbing about that. Vegas is by far the best place for the tourney.)

But, leaving the T&M aside, I'm with him in being unhappy about cutting the number of teams down to eight. I'd like to hear more about the financial reasons for that, because it's one of the great things about basketball tournaments...giving every team a shot at the end (besides, as Shy says, being able to motivate your team with that possibility that they can still win a trip to the NCAA).

He doesn't seem upset at Vegas, to me...he doesn't like playing at UNLV's freaking home arena. Oh, and not letting every team have a chance is dumb. Even J. Shy tweeted how UConn a few years back was like 9th in their conference, but ended up winning the conference tourney before going on to win the whole damn thing...

Agree. Bad decision by the MWC to take it down to an 8 team tournament. There is always something special about having the "second season" - where anyone can get hot and win it all.

Glad we have a coach who sticks up for the kids. Having Shyatt's caring personality documented like this will help with recruiting, imo

I don't understand how it makes financial sense to cut the tournament down to 8. One of the reasons the tournament is held at the T & M was to cut down on overhead costs since it's already on campus of a league member, basically a pure profit for the league, which I get and support, even if it is an advantage to UNLV.

But what happens in the years that the bigger MW fan bases aren't in the top 8? It's not likely but it will happen eventually. I'm talking Wyoming (may happen more than we like), New Mexico etc. Then there's zero incentive to travel for the tournament? What if conference season starts and it doesn't look like Wyoming will be a top 8 team? Yes we wouldn't bring as much as we would in a good year, but even in our down years we are one of the top fan bases there. Then I have zero incentive to book tickets.

I think this is one of the main problems with not inviting all schools. You get down to the 1 or 2 week mark, and don't know if your team is "in" or not...do you book the trip, on the chance they make it - or do you pass on it on the chance they won't. That doesn't work for most of us...we have to plan further out than a handful of days to make things happen.

Shyatt takes a veiled shot at Burman in the published piece saying there was, "...no, I repeat, no communication..." from the AD regarding this possibility.

Long and short of it- the coaches were left completely out of the decision and even Burman didn't communicate to Shyatt about this.

I think Burman's starting to feel the distinct sting of being the least popular executive in the Athletic Department...

Weren't these decisions made by the university presidents?

This is a major issue and I could see some fallout with fewer tickets being sold or at least pre-ordered.

I'm not sure. It even sounded like the league offices weren't fully aware until after the presidents made the decision. I find that hard to believe but I saw some people claiming that on twitter(so it must be true)

I hope holmgren, gags, or another media member schedules an interview with McGinity and asks him why he voted this way. And with Burman as well to see if he was involved
