Shyatt calls it out

I lov coach shy. He is resurrecting our program. That being said, you don't want to be criticized over flaws, be flawless. The Cowboys made a ton of stupid mistakes that cost us the game against SDSU. I understand it sucks to be called out, but he's also one of the highest paid state employees. Wyoming fans are quick to tear down but when it's good were also next level sunshine pumpers. Shyatt has to take both

Most of those two turnovers occur in two areas - low post bounce passes, and top of the key weak passes that are picked off. The top of the key passes are easy to fix. That's a loss of focus. The low post TO's a re a little harder. The more you try force feed Nance down low, you are going to give those up. I can live with those, but not the lazy ones. I'm confident Shyatt is working on those.

I watched the video and just penned a genuine, send-in-the-mail letter to Coach Shyatt. Here's what is says:

Dear Coach Shyatt,

Congratulations on a great season so far and for coming away with a tough, thrilling triple-overtime win on the road against Fresno State last Saturday!

I watched your comments online after the game, in which you immediately addressed negative comments you heard about after the disappointing loss to San Diego State last week. I understand your frustration.

I was a student at UW during the Dembo/Leckner era and lived in Laramie after school through the thrilling 2002 season with Josh Davis and Marcus Bailey. I believe you set the foundation that returned the winning tradition to Wyoming basketball that allowed Steve McClean to have those great years. For 19 years, I never missed a single home game.

I moved to Southern Colorado in 2002 and wasn’t able to attend many home games much after that. A few years later, I returned to Laramie to watch a game - to the empty arena that a mediocre basketball program creates. I couldn’t believe it. The students were mostly gone and it was like wqatching a scrimmage. I was pleased when you returned to Wyoming. I loved what you did for Wyoming basketball in 1997-1998 and I felt I knew why you were coming back. To rebuild the winning tradition, make some things right and do it the right way.

You said you were hurt by the comments after the SDSU loss. Anybody who watched the game knows that Wyoming’s turnovers, good offensive rebounding by SDSU and uncharacteristic free-throw shooting down the stretch by them resulted in Wyoming’s only conference loss. They had a good day. They are a very good team with a good coach. Your guys showed a lot of heart and almost overcame the mistakes and the good play of your opponent.

Please don’t take rude comments spoken or written in the moments after disappointment to heart. Wyoming fans want to win in the worst way – and in this case, truly the worst way. Believe me; we know what we have and how hard it is to win in this league. Social media now allows those thoughts to get broadcast in a way that was impossible the last time you coached here. It doesn’t make it right.

Coach Shyatt – Wyoming loves this team and Wyoming loves you as the coach of this team. I’ve got my tickets for Air Force on February 7th and we are planning our trip to Las Vegas for the Conference Tournament. Thank you again for recruiting guys that Wyoming can be proud of. Go Pokes!

Sincerely,

CowboyCO
This is a great letter but I hope you didn't really sign with your handle LOL. I think Shyatt has been spot on with his comments towards the fan base. I like that we're all riled up and backing them even more now. I think Shyatt knew what he was doing with these comments...doubling down.

^^^

Exactly. He's not mad about criticism of himself. He's mad about 1) people calling out players, and 2) people saying, "I told you they weren't any good." We lost one game in a month, and we lost to a damn good team. There's no reason we can't beat them in San Diego, just like there's no reason that CSU can't beat us in Laramie. If we want to win the conference, we have to play well every single game. We may lose a few, but we can't lose to teams that are not competing for the conference championship. That puts way too much pressure on the road games at SDSU and New Mexico.

Fan support would be nice though. Saying that we suck because we lost a tough game is really stupid.

EDIT: I'd like to add to this that we stole that loss back from SDSU by winning at Fresno. SDSU was unable to win at Fresno. We're even now. CSU is probably going to beat SDSU this week as well. The home win over SDSU would have been great, but losing that game is far from fatal.

I will eat my shirt if CSU wins. Their teams is not very good imo.

On here and gowyogo everyone seems to deny ever saying anything bad or mean lol
The positive talk farrrrr outweighs the negative talk on here. If the coaches or players want to feel good they should just visit this forum.

I'm just sayin.. the comments are funny. "Someone said something bad about this team? Well who could possibly do something like that? Not me... nooo"
We just have to keep the puppet guy from posting.

Is this directed at me? I didn't say a single thing about the SDSU loss. Didn't even post about it. Tough loss to a good team. I didn't think this team was going to go undefeated in conference play. Teams lose. The only negative things I have posted about the basketball team is their offense can be hard to watch (it can) the free throw shooting at the end of the Fresno game was pathetic (it was) and I think Jason Mac should start ahead of Grabau (if you want to consider that negative). This team has wildly exceeded my expecations, which were pretty lofty. If the team ever starts to hit three-pointers, the sky is the limit.

CSU winning and getting into the top-25 is good for our at-large chances.

Maybe it was the other puppet dude.

It would certainly benefit us if SDSU wins, but I just don't see it happening. Avila will get shut down.

Please don't get me wrong....I am happy to see the success we are having with our basketball program. I am just a little confused about tactics and offensive sets early in the shot clock. I can see why we have a great shooting percentage because many of the field goals are dunks. Maybe I am wrong here, but watch the next game and see how often they have Larry or Junior at the low post before the last 15 seconds of the shot clock. As I recall generally they are in a 4 high set above the FTE and running a weave type of motion hoping to get a backdoor cut or a dibble penetration by the guards. But don't take this as a knock on Pappa Shy look at it as a dumb fan looking for some insight. ;-)

Why would you dismiss our high shooting percentage because it's a result of dunks? Dunks are a high percentage shot. I bet other teams would like to run the "dunk play" as often as Wyoming. We only get to run the dunk play so often because we're good at offense.

We get dunks so much because Larry Nance is a fuckin boss and dunks when he wants, and Adams gets a lot and sets a lot up to Cooke because Adams is a fuckin dude that throws it down as hard as LeBron so when people do try to meet him at the rim he dishes it to Cooke who throws it down as well.

Adams dribble drive dunking/passing sets up for a lot of dunks. Larry doesn't need much help.

I ran into Josh Adams at a football game this year and asked him, "How many times have you watched the dunk against UNLV last year?" He said, "A lot."

That one dunk, over Khem Birch, in crunch time, is an all-timer.

And he just keeps doing it game-in, game out. The TV announcers at Fresno said, "He almost hit his head on the rim, and it was just routine for him." The announcers wanted to see Josh take over the game, and said he was almost being too unselfish.

When was the last time we had a player accused of that!?

wyopig, I didn't dismiss it, I simply attributed it to. A dunk is a very high percentage shot therefore it stands to reason that if a team has a lot of them then their shooting percentage is going to be good. ;) Beav, at least your basketball analysis is spirited and filled with allegiance.

“We’ve had one loss in five weeks," Shyatt said. "And I’m going to say this because I love the people of Wyoming, and I love our institution, and I love our fans, and I love our players. I can’t tell you how hurt I was when I was told some of the things said because we lost one game this month.

"I’ll be honest with you: I would have loved this team tonight if we had fallen short by a basket or two, because they have great will, they represent the right things. You know what, there’s an old expression, ‘You don’t know what you have until you don’t have it any longer.’ And shame on any of those things that I was told about.”

Seriously, in this day and age, it has to be tough to be criticized in the media / social media / etc. Its everwhere.

I hope the Pokes keep on winning and give it some hell!

Glad you posted this...I was looking for it.

Shyatt needs to stick to what he does best...coaching & managing the Cowboy basketball team. His boss needs to whisper in his ear that he shouldn't broad-brush an entire fan base with such statements. I never read / saw / heard about whatever he is even remotely referencing - anywhere. Not saying things weren't said (he states he was "told"), but if it wasn't public before, why make it that way now?

:twocents:

I think this was a classic political move man. Throw some unknown fringe guy under the bus and challenge our fans. Defend your awesome team and state all at once. Get your fanbase fired up and questioning themselves. If we sellout Saturday Shyatt's mission has been accomplished. Nice play coach! Yet another badass move from the man himself rallying the troops one more time. Shy's the man. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Nice timing too. Right after an epic road win and week for our Cowboys. Have we had a week as big as last week in Wyoming sports for like 12 years? Top 25 at home to rival with a hard loss, then winning in a place we never have before. The good times are back. Get to the AA if you can swing it.
