Sellers could be the key

I look at the roster with the addition of Granberry, also looking at years eligible, and it makes me wonder...

Granted, Sellers has shown us very little and many have suggested that it might be better if he found a different hobby;

however with coach saying that he wants the kids to bust their butts in the weight room/conditioning off-season programs, sellers might have the highest room for improvement of anybody with exception too halderson. He has the potential to be a force inside if he changes his bodyfat ratio... and it all falls squarely on his shoulders to make the progress.

we don't need him to be a sam perkins, or a colton iverson... but if he could give us fifteen tough minutes of rebounding and boxing out, it sure would lighten the load on nance, and give cooke a reprive from drawing fouls.

we just need him to be in shape, and have a monkey on his back to be aggresive.

I've pretty much checked out on sellers, but i want him to succeed and live up to the responsibilities of his schollie.

thoughts?

You might be right. I haven't completely given up on Sellers yet. Didn't he red shirt the first year he was here?

Sellers certainly has the size (6'10 250lbs), but his jumping, rebounding, and scoring in the paint all need to addressed, and all can be improved. How much, hard to say, but I want him to succeed just as much as any other player on the team.

He is a hard worker - I'll give him that. I have never seen him loafing while in a game.

True. He just needs to develop the skills during the off season. With hard work, maybe some help from teammates and what not, he should make some good strides over the summer. I'm not asking him to race down the court with a quick little PG or anything, just want him to be able to at least be a good threat on the inside. He has the size, just needs to develop the skills.

I don't think he was in that bad of shape this past season (I understand he had lost about 20 pounds compared to when he first showed up on campus). He is just a big boy.

I actually think he has less potential than most of the others, because he appears to be limited athletically. Although he is 6'10" he plays exclusively below the rim and doesn't have quick feet on defense. I don't think it is lack of effort, but simply lack of athleticism. He actually has a nice skill set with a couple of post moves and go to shots that he is pretty efficient with.

In contrast, you have a guy like Cooke who is quite a bit behind Sellers in terms of skill development, but he has the athleticism to defend at this level and rebound out of his area. If he can improve his FT shooting (and frankly, nowhere to go but up) and develop a couple of post moves that he has confidence in, he could have an impact.

I could be wrong of course, but I just don't see Sellers ever being more than an occasional spot contributor.

Give me a break... I wish sellers would turn out as much as anyone... But he just isn't good. He can't even dominate games at half acre and he is 6'10! I want him to contribute and anything can happen but he doesn't have an amazing hook shot, he can barely run at this point and I have a feeling he will always be battling injuries. I wish he didn't have a scholly because we could use it on someone else. Like I said I hope he turns out but he's not good and he certainly won't be the key to success

I didn't mean that his improvement was going to make or break our season. Im with you gopokes1399, I havent seen much from him.

what i am saying is; when you look at next years roster you see the big weakness... the lack of interior depth. Sellers is basically a void on the roster, even though he is a 6'10 void.

I could care less if he scores one point next year. I think we need to use him like the birdman, or rodman (given sellers lacks their abilities)... but he can be a 6'10 hustle player that comes in for 1-2 minutes at a time... boxes out, grabes boards, and gives hard fouls.

Effort is not talent. A 6'10 body that can fill space and give depth to our most glaring weakness (the legs and health of our bigs). Herndon wont be ready next fall but his future is bright. Halderson will be the only viable back up to the 4-5 position.

Vernon is 6'6, he wont do very well substituting in at the 4 or 5 position.

thats why im saying we have to get some minutes out of sellers, regardless of how we feel about his production.
