That postgame interview was a glaring example of poor leadership. He didn't take accountability for that loss and instead called out and criticized his own players to the press. It is one thing to call out the team on poor execution and bad mistakes, its another to call out individual players and talk negatively about them.
He inherited a veteran and disciplined team. The only thing that changed was how he chose to staff the new regime and run the program.
Its one thing to do this individually, or calling out the team in the locker room, its another issue to call out players to the press like that. Instead of addressing how he and his coaching staff might have contributed to the loss through strategy and adjustments, or even changing how they practice, he singled out his athletes' performances, which comes off as weak leadership. Great coaches own the team they put on the field and take responsibility. They understand that blame is shared and that leadership means protecting the team and building them up for future success.
After the ASU showing, I decided it would be wise if I didn't put much focus on Wyo Football this year - and to do productive things instead. I listened to Idaho on the radio. He's lost me. I hope he doesn't start losing players to the portal soon.
My biggest concern is a bad hire here may have just killed the program. We don't have much time to resuscitate. That hole will practically dig itself and all that will be left to do is to fill it in.
Everyone will go find new jobs and we'll be stuck putting flowers on the grave. Its next to impossible to start a FBS program. There is no accountability for putting it in the ground.
That's the end of my axe grinding rant....
