Ryan Holmgren is no Mike Vorel

Kid is a beat writer at a small daily in Wyoming. I've never worked for Lee, but I doubt he's salary if he's not management. He probably works 60 hours a week and is only allowed to claim 40, paid between $13-17 an hour and has an editor yelling at him if he even thinks about putting in OT.

And no, his managers aren't dissuading him from doing good work to avoid giving him a raise. This is the newspaper biz. He could win a Pulitzer and Lee still wouldn't give him a raise.

A small daily? The Cody Enterprise is a small daily. Let me stick up for the CST if it's okay. It's the largest circulated and most widely read newspaper in the entire state. I just stood up for the CST. No thanks needed.

 My bad, big daily for Wyoming. Calling the Casper Star Tribune a small daily isn't an insult. It's a decent paper with a circ between 20-25,000. Doing work well beyond what most papers that size do. The Cody Enterprise (great paper by the way) is a twice weekly community newspaper. But I might consider the Riverton Ranger or Rawlins Daily Times (also a great paper) small dailies if we are getting technical.

Still, being the biggest fish in a small pond doesn't make you a big fish. Again, that's not an insult. But this is off topic, let's get back to trashing a new reporter working his ass off while getting his feet wet in a new market.

I would object to anyone saying that the initiator of this thread -- or the individuals who followed up with posts were 'trashing' Ryan Holmgren, as much as they were simply pointing out that said author was not (until recently) providing the same kind of consistent content that his predecessor was - that's all.

Ryan's been on my show previously, I happen to like him (not that he should give a rats ass) and he's beginning to deliver some great stuff of late.

The fact that people are noticing and paying attention is a great thing I think.

I suppose this topic is very subjective...like many things.

Seems you have (and I have) explained the thought process of my OP several times, over and over. Some folks just don't get it, and will continue to just toss shit. Oh well. Agree Ryan has stepped up his game. Still doesn't change the fact that I would have liked to have heard the story on Maddog, #6, the Wyo-Prep walk-ons, Omar, and a bunch of "where are they now" stories (etc.), this off season / summer though.

Credit where its due. He may have started out slowly, but lets credit Ryan Holmgren, he is kicking some serious ass these days each day in the CST.

I agree. He is doing great. His style is different than Mike, but he is doing awesome.

Gags has done some great things lately too. I think Vorel raised the bar for everyone. Maybe Gags felt he just needed to do the minimum in year's past, but Vorel maybe pressured him.

Overall, I am reading some great stuff.

People didn't believe me when I said he would pick things up once camp started.

Good for you...but that is not what people (ME) where talking about. He was quiet and basically didn't exist this summer, no coverage, no inside stories, nothing. Of course things "picked up" now - he is in 5th gear, of course we are 10 days away from our home opener, and 17 days into camp though. It didn't hurt that Gags was kicking his ass in scoop and stories - that got him going, and it didn't hurt that posters here stated their desires for Vorel-Like coverage.

Who didn't believe you?
How would people not believe you that there would be more stories?

This isn't our first rodeo. We get how sports work.
