Ryan Anaya- Natrona recruit quits

I think what gets to them is how dominant they were in high school, where the HS coaches glorify Friday nights and college ball is not an option for most of these kids, so they get hyped up. They think they are some bad ass football players (because they were) then get to spring ball, or fall camp and are served the biggest piece of humble pie they have ever had.
I couldn't imagine thinking I was all that--and I'm not even saying they are cocky, just they were so dominant in HS----then doing drills with someone like Brett Smith or Shaun Wick and then thinking "holy shit...I'm nothing compared to these guys".

Big fish in a little pond scenario. The ones that are successful go into it thinking they need to earn the right to play and they must prove themselves to the coaches and the world. They best thing anyone can do for a Wyoming kid is to get their asses out of the state and let them see what is out there. 5 Star camps, elite camps and Top tier AAU programs all serve this purpose. Then they come into college with a whole different perspective.

Yes, Tanner Simpson is a walk-on. I know because I pay his tuition! LOL

That's a investment that will pay off in the long run. I'm sure the Hathaway fund is paying off as you raised a " bright" son. That's totally meant as a compliment by the way! Good family, good gene's, good golly! Which him the best of luck through his college career. And thanks for being a family member of the Poke's who's willing to give his opinions on the state of the football programing. Thank You

Thank you. He is a good kid and yes he does get the Hathaway money but it isn't as significant as many would think. The Hathaway scholarship, although a great feature for Wyoming kids, is becoming less and less with the rising costs of higher education. He works hard every day with the ultimate goal of earning a scholarship. To many of the kids it is confirmation that they are "good enough" to play at the D1 level. It isn't always about the money but rather about the status. I am in awe of the work that these young men put in every day. It amazes me how they can manage their time and prioritize events in their life. I can tell you that he does not have time to go hang out at the Buck, at least that I am aware of! LOL His classes are very demanding and when he misses because of football he has to work twice as hard to keep up. As I read many of the posts on this board it seems that the team gets characterized by the actions of a few. I realize that is how it works, I am here to assure you that the actions of a few do not define the values, and the work ethic of the majority. I have been coaching football in various capacities for 20 years now at the high school level and I had no idea how demanding it is to be a D1 athlete. So they have my ultimate respect and admiration.

Not to go all Uncle Rico here, but after my sr year I had five offers to play football. Chadron State, Black Hills, Eastern Washington, ISU and Scottsdale Community College. Nothing spectacular, but it was still fun to meet coaches, etc. What I gathered early on is that it wasn't worth it to me. What I mean by that is my dream to play college ball was met with the reality that came with it. And it wasn't worth it. So...before I call these guys pansies, I was there. I saw it and I walked away from what I loved. I applaud Tanner, jarhead. Walking on is the most asinine thing I could think of. I had money in front of my face and still didnt take it.
