Running game (lack therof)

So, want your thoughts. What in the heck is the deal with running game.

Lack of talent?
Lack of blocking on the line?
Spread offense scheme?
Play calling?

Even a mediocre running game is proven to open up the passing game more. What is out deal on why we can't run the ball? I'm worried that we have to have a more balanced attack. Although the Wyoming Brett Smiths is good, if we become too one dimensional, even our O will get figured out.

Are Wick or May promising backs for our future. I love Brandon Miller's fight, but he ain't a RB. Ghalli seemed to succeed at RB, but we need all the help we can get on D.

I liked what I saw with Wick against Cal Poly, he refused to go down without a fight and tried to push the pile every single down he got the ball. Problem was, was that the o-line got very little push up front for him. Occasionaly the o-line will open up a good hole or get a good push, and the RBs (Wick, Miller, and May) all get good to great gains, following the blocks and fighting for more yards. But sadly, most of the time, our o-line gets pushed around.

First off I can't understand how we can't find some holes for the RBs seeing as the other teams focus on Smith to pass or Smith to run. It would seem that this would create some nice opportunity.

It looks like we have some talent at the RB position with Wicks and Mays, but they're not there yet, not this season anyway. After 4 games they each barely have 100 yards, with most coming in one game for each.

Our blocking and the O-line seems to get beat up more than they should. Is it built for pass protection not running?

Our schemes and play calling could be the problem. Maybe we are just so predictable that the other teams read us too easily. Not to mention we don't seem to even try to establish a run game. A running game is a lot about rhythm during the game and from week to week. One week we'll give a guy some carries and then the next week almost nothing. We even do it during games where we'll give a guy some carries and then abandon it. We're just a "try and hit the streaking receiver" team, and if no one's open, the QB takes off. We're scoring more points, so I don't see it stopping. The downside is pass-happy teams leave their defenses on the field too long and have horrible 3rd down conversion rates. Sound familiar?

Sutton hasn't played so requested a red shirt, which it appears they are doing. In other words, he doesn't want to burn a year of eligibility for whatever school he is playing at in the future.

What a disappointment Sutton is. I admit, his high school YouTube video is awesome. But that dude has been a major disappointment. He is so into himself that he is oblivious what is around him.

I'm just surprised our line is a major issue. Seems like we had several returners and lots of promise. The Toledo game was the first time I had concerns with the line. No excuse to drive down on a team multiple times, only to stall out inside the five on four downs. No running game drastically changes a game. 3 or 4 in the box is much different than forcing teams to bring 5 or 6.

Too much "swag" and talking about hs I assume...

For those without twitter I ought to do some.screen shots. Hilarious stuff from him.
'I don't need to say much, let swagg do the talking"
"Going to watch a game, remembering what I used to do to them"
"Chillin" attached to a picture of him with his shirt off laying in his car
Dozens of tweets about UT San Antonio (his next college is my guess)
Too many to list.

Anyway, back to the REAL rb issues, unless we develop a run game, I can't see us progressing much on offense.

Its hard to tell how bad the running game is. The Offensive line hasn't been doing anyone any favors this season. With that said, I don't see anyone (including Wick) that evens looks of Alvester Alexander's caliber, let alone better.

This is a huge deal though. No protection + bad run game = Everyone teeing off on Brett Smith. If Idaho can get tremendous pressure on Brett, God help this team going forward. My hope is that Brett doesn't get another concussion at any point this season.

I think Alexander going to the NFL hurt us quite a bit in this department. Both freshman have some skills but need to hit the weight room. Miller is a great receiving back, in other words should probably be a wide receiver. Not alot of great skill in the RB corp but I expect they will look alot better against teams like Colorado State :)

I think a lot of it speaks to the culture within the team and the program. No run defense and a poor running game- seems to me there's very little emphasis on the run at all. With Alexander bolting early, Muhammed wanting to go back to defense, and Sutton not being motivated, I'd have to start questioning the value this staff places on running in football. This team has become very one-dimensional and might indicate a one-trick pony high in the organization.
