Regular season is a wrap. Thoughts?

I know it was a little disappointing for some of us this year. Overall I'm still happy with some things I saw. Naughton and James look like some of the best freshmen players we've had in the program since Josh Adams/Nance Jr. Last year's recruiting class could be an absolute program builder! It looks like Moemeka and Conway have fantastic attitudes as redshirt players. This might be the steal of this whole year, giving those 2 players a year more seasoning without having to waste a year being even less productive. Moemeka to me seems to hold the keys to the programs future. If he can compete with the bigs in the MWC for the next 3 to 4 years we are GOLDEN. Lets do some grades!

I'll base these grades off of seniority and what we need MWC level-wise based on where these guys are at.

Josh Adams- A+ A banner year for an all time legendary Cowboy player. Sure there's been some slip ups here and there but mainly do to having too much weight on his shoulders. His actions speak enough for him and we have whole threads dedicated to him. A true leader. NUFF SAID and I can't put it all into words proper.

Jason McManamen- A Here's a guy that we argued before the season started if he could even be a legit starter in this league. Well he's pretty much answered that question. Most lethal 3 point shooter in the MWC. Has proven to be a gamer too. Big strides forward for McMAN this year!

Alan Herndon- C Has been non existent some games. Plays too soft most of times. Does do some things that are critical for us winning including his flow with the team. When Big Al has a big game we typically win. Needs to work on his aggression and he just seems like he's in outer space some games. Disappointing year for Al but hoping for better next year which seems likely. Just expected more especially after he's redshirted.

Jeremy Lieberman- C+ What a rollercoaster year for this kid. Has gone from should he be on a D-1 roster??? to Is this our 3rd or 4th best player???? I almost want to bump him up to a B- for his finish, but he was shaky for the first half of the season. I like the fight in him though, shades of Grabau for real. After Trey's departure he's played much better.

Trey Washington III- F Failure to complete season and off the team. Don't know the whole story and never will. He was looking pretty good too, certainly in that Lieberman area with room to be a quality contributor. It's over now.

Alexander Aka Gorski- C- Not sure what to make of Aka. He's made some shots that have been big for us. He's had some ok games. Just not enough development for me outta of him this year. Doesn't do anything that stands out too much for too long. I don't even get an idea of what the future might hold for this guy. He can knock down the 3, needs work on FT's.

Justin James- B- I'm going bump this grade up a tad based on youth. As a freshmen he's shown some real nice flashes of the player he can be. Has the tools to do it all. Needs to work on a lot of things FT's, ball handling, improving defense more, improving mental game, hell I guess just keep improving all the tools! Still very happy we got this kid in our program and will be a key to future success.

Hayden Dalton- C+ I like this guy's heart, aggression, and passion. In those key categories he seems to only trail Adams and McMan on this team. Yes he's just too skinny but hopefully a good off season will change things. Has had an injury setback near the end of the season when he was becoming fun to watch. Dude goes to war even if it feels like he doesn't belong. Has potential to be a Utah style stretch big.

Jordan Naughton- B+ Looks like our big freshmen get!!! At this moment our 3rd best player??? He's raw but powerful. Doesn't back down from challenges. I feel like from the first time I saw this kid play this year that I wanted to see him on the court more compared to alternatives. He can even score too! Flushes dunks and isn't the worst shooting big we've seen. Wait did he throw in a hook shot?? Biggest part so far of what's looking like a great freshmen class.

Jonathan Barnes- D+ I think there's space for this kid on the team. He's gonna need to figure out how to throw his weight around more and probably needs to get even stronger since he can't jump a lick. Really is gonna have to put in work on footwork, positional/mental game, and offensive skill set. I just want him to be a big that can D up, grab boards, not hurt the team while in game, and get the occasional stick back by the time he's a senior.

Morris Marshall- Incomplete How can I even say anything about him. I don't know anything except he hasn't earned playing time. Don't know if he has a future at UW. Don't know anything about his personality. Don't know shit but hey at least he didn't get kicked off the team. Feel bad for him....maybe I shouldn't who the hell knows.

Coach Shyatt and staff- B I know we've had our gripes on here. I know we aren't where we want to be. I still think these guys did a great job in game coaching and leading up to most games with what they had. When I argued against some of things they did it became clear that they didn't have too many other choices most times the more I watched. A lot of the kids just aren't close to top tier MWC levels yet even on a down year. I think they did a pretty good job bringing some of them along as the season progressed. The Mo Marsahll situation has cost us big time this year, no way around that. We can bitch about Shy's recruits but this class actually looks pretty awesome to me. The guys with C's above have to raise those to B grades next year in order for any success at MWC level. I was hoping to be better then we are but knew this was a very real possibility.

This is pretty well thought out, but I'm not sure how you can value Gorski more than Dalton. And go ahead and give Barnes an F. He earned it.

I'm actually, somehow, agreeing 100% with SD on this one. Barnes highlight of the year was that wide open dunk the other night. And Dalton had a run where he was a top 3 or 4 guy for us a couple games, Gorski could have sat out and not really affected much

I didn't value Gorski more then Dalton. Dalton C+>Gorski C-
Could've given Barnes an F I suppose or even a D to D- I suppose....I liked what he did against CSU. Games against rivals maybe count a little more in my memory bank/books.

I'll also add that the reason I have elevated ratings on James and Naughton is them being freshmen. I based my ratings off of seniority and what we'd expect from guys based on age in the program. The other guys are sophomores (some even redshirt sophs) so they get a little harsher but still flexible grades. Dalton has just been a little too inconsistent for me like everyone, but he probably could be seen in the B- category....maybe. Remember the start of the season was rough on most our players. The list goes down top to bottom from most minutes played and if you look at it like that it helps to think where they land.
Go ahead yourselves fellas! Hand out some season grades. Remember we still have some time to earn extra credit in the MWC tourney. I wouldn't downgrade anyone after MWC tourney but if we make a run I might bump up some grades.

Good write up. I agree for the most part, but Gorski > Lieberman.

Josh A+, gold star, two thumbs up, Nobel prize in basketball, AAA rating with the BBB, etc..
JMac A- has turned into a great player and exceeded expectations.
Naughton B+, not his fault coach wouldn't play him more.
James B-, see Naughton.
the rest.. I don't want to be rude.

Cosmic Cowboy,

A very well thought out post. A bit generous, imo.

Sadly, I'd give James a D. He looked great in the pre conference and did next to nothing in the conference. His lack of playing time in the second 1/2 of the season tells you what his trajectory was.

Naughton gets an incomplete. Did he play 15 minutes in more than a game or 2? At times he looked formidable but he has no post moves yet. Great potential but he has a ways to go.

The rest of your grades are spot on, I think. Really, without Adams, I don't think we win more than 3 conference games. If that is remotely accurate, then the current roster has to improve leaps and bounds next year just to make up for the loss of Adams.

Overall, a very disappointing season. To finish this poorly in a bad conference is giant leap backwards. I'm sure coach was expecting more out of Barnes and Herndon. I don't think it's unfair to say we had the worst inside game in the conference.

I'd give Herndon a d+, I know the potential is there but it is frustrating watching him play. Barnes would be a D-. I agree with everything else the op had to say.

Well I might be that kind of grade giver you know what I mean ;)

You might be right on James, going back to looking at stats in conference it isn't pretty for him. I might need to think of him more in the C range actually. Still feel like he played sound enough D for the most part. Naughton hasn't played much but was a key factor in getting some W's, nobody can deny that fact. He played great in both UNLV games, was a reason we swept CSU (stat lines don't always tell us about a presence made and we needed physicality those games to slow them down), and think about this one..without him what does SDSU do to us on the glass??????? :brick: :brick: :brick: :deadhorse1: :deadhorse1: :shit: :shit: :grenade: :grenade: :grenade: :puke: :puke: :poke: :poke:
Something like that I think.....I mean he didn't play great against SDSU but who else even bodies those guys to get those fouls without being totally dominated. I think he deserved more minutes all year then he got. Part of the reason the staff got a B imo. Not enough development for a lot of guys that we needed in season.
My ratings might be generous though who knows? We really did have a rough conference year.

My 2 cents is probably not worth 2 cents. I started to sour on this team after the loss at Air force. That was a lousy team we blew a 20 point lead against. Many of the young guys had some good moments. But none of them stepped up on a consistent basis, at home or on the road. To me, the only real bright spot of the season was sweeping csewe. Of the other 5 conference wins, only one was on the road. And that win, at NM, was almost a one man show. I really don't expect much at the tournament. Frankly, I'd be pleasantly surprised if we got out of the first round.
