Recruiting - 2014

Forgive me as I have been so focused on the incoming FB recruits..

Where does WYO stand for 2014's class?

Glancing at other MW member's classes ESP the top 3 programs (SDSU, UNM, UNLV).. I am worried. I am very aware of the ranking system and it's inaccuracies a lot of the time.. But my gut tells me the Pokes are getting killed in the recruiting trail and nobody wants to admit it.

Thoughts?

We have already used all of our scholarships for this class, in the early signing period. 3 from vegas, 5 from CO and a PG from california.

we are actually even one over our class. We only have 2 scholarships to give so someone is going to be moving on after the season. Not sure who. Or maybe the kid from torrington can go on the hathaway.

In regaurds to our incoming class. I think it will be Shyatts best class. The small forward out of vegas is big 6-6 and plays great defense so he could fit right in right away. And the center from colorado has potential to be very good. Was getting lots of interest from some big schools and has only been playing ball a couple of years. The PG is a good shooter and decent size for a pg I beleive. Is our recruiting as good as SDSU or UNLV? No. and it won't be until we start winning championships regularly if ever. But If you keep recruiting better players every year and develope the ones you have, you will have success.

I know Lieberman is supposed to be good. In terms of Shy's best class, I may agree. Will need more length to compete with top half of MW as SDSU and UNLV are only getting longer next year. I would hate to see more "projects" come in as opposed to a guy or two who can play right away (which I believe they will have to).

I also think it will turn out to be Shyatt's best class overall and it's really well balanced. We'll have a legit big man in Jonathan Barnes, who I think is going to be regarded as an absolute steal. He has unbelievable upside and is just getting started on his development curve. We're kind of lucky we got him locked up in the early signing period because he started to get attention from some high major programs after his AAU season. Diontae Jones will give us something we're sorely lacking - size and athleticism on the wing. He might be a work in progress offensively but that's fine. Jeremy Liebermann will be a solid PG, a bit more of a scorer right now than facilitator and if there's anything I'd really like Shyatt to find it would be a playmaker/orchestrator at that spot but I'll take it. I'll bet all three of these guys are contributing by their sophomore years.

I don't know if any of these guys are "projects" at least along the lines of some of the ones we currently have. I think even the big guy out of CO could contribute right away. He played great in some AAU tournaments against some of the best hs post players in the country and did very well apparently. Don't think he is very polished but should be able to play.

Haven't seen anything on Barnes, but that's great news. Big wings seem to be the new wave in hoops.. I hope we can lock into that. Having big wings in Shy's defensive scheme would be nasty, IMO.

Barnes went up against the #1 rated center in the country, and held him to 6 points. So, Barnes already is pretty good at defense, and at 6'10 250lbs, gives us the real big man down low.

I love this class.

Dionte Jones might be the best defensive small forward in high school basketball. He's a Shyatt wet dream as he already plays like a Shyatt guy: disciplined, unselfish, aggressive....I think he can play right away next year.

Johnathan Barnes might be one of the best defensive centers coming out of high school ball. Two years from now, people are going to be looking back on the great 2013 Colorado recruiting class and realize Barnes might be the best of the bunch. This is another guy that might be able to play early as he takes pride in defense and rebounding.

Lieberman is a true point guard. He looks like he can really shoot it, but makes great decisions with the ball, has a pretty impressive assists/turnover ratio...He'll give some great depth to the guard line and should make up for the loss of Sobey.

I think the key to next year is the physical development of guys we already have here. Halderson and Herndon absolutely have to put on weight. If we can get one of them big enough to jump into the post rotation with Barnes, we might be looking at an NCAA tournament appearance.

I think recruiting will improve from here on out. We lost a couple of bad apples last year when the last of the Schroyer guys left. Washington and Martinez were talented but they certainly weren't team players. We've got good chemistry and I think it showed up in recruiting this year. With the upgrades coming to the AA over the next two seasons, it's going to be obvious to front range recruits who's taking basketball seriously and who isn't. Wyoming will have the nicest basketball facilities in a large region. I think our crowds are starting to grow. They should really take off next year as the team doesn't lose much and looks to be a real contender for post-season.

This is the most important. With SDSU starting their project campaign after the season for a new practice facility ($14m I believe), UNLV's facility and upcoming TMC upgrades, The Pit's transformation - Wyo's will be a BIG advantage and in good company. As far as my knowledge, nobody else has anything comparable in the MW.

Wyoming will never recruit blue chip or ESPN top 150 players. Marcus Bailey, Josh Davis, Jay Straight, Ewing, Slater, Ratliff.... None of those guys would have been ranked in their era had Rivals existed.

They were all kids who developed and turned out to be great at Wyoming.

Last years CSU team was the perfect example of what we need to be. Recruited good kids who play hard and stay together.... It turned out well for them.

Larry Nance Jr. Is the model of a Shyatt kid at Wyoming, we just need 3-4 more of him.
