Recruit Marboe backs out of verbal, commits to Idaho

That's a tough one, but he was going to have to greyshirt here, and Wyoming wouldn't back down on it even when he expressed reservations about it. He's not upset with the Cowboys at all. I got an email from his dad today, and he told me it really came down to being close to family and playing in the state he's grown up in.

I would have liked to see him in the Brown and Gold, but if he's confident and happy with the decision (which it seems like he is), you can't really fault him too much for changing his mind.

Plus, greyshirting would have only been successful had he really worked his tail off, and if he was thinking he would have been happier somewhere else, that probably wouldn't have happened.

I agree though, it's too bad. I always hate to see us lose the ones we get verbals from.

Hello WyoNation (1st post),

hopefully we can turn it around like last year, had a commitment from RB from TX who then went to NM (probably heard they can fix his grades heh-heh), but we then went out a got James Davis an even better RB.

Amazed at the number of 3 star athletes that don't have offers from BCS schools yet, according to scout.com. Some oddities like slow 5"7" WRs????? But some that look like good recruits that the pokes could clean up on if we beat the BSC guys to the punch with an offer. looks like we are recruiting big frames with speed that we can mold over 5 years. They say you can't coach speed, well I disagree, you can make players somewhat faster, but you definitely can't make the taller. Although last years class was our best in the Glenn era and this years is looking good we need to improve fast. This bowl season proved that the MWC is getting better so we need to not only get better, but get better faster than the rest of the conference and that is hard do while our recruiting classes keep ranking in the middle (BYU, Utah, TCU, keep signing more 3 star HS players than we do, can only play 11 at a time but I know we don't have 11 on both sides of the ball). we need to at least split our non-conf games and finish in the top 4 in the WMC to go to bowl games. Glenn has proved he can do more with less (see 2003, 2004 seasons) but it could be easier with more 3 star HS recruits-last year had 4, this year it would be nice to get 5 (last year some were upgraded late-so maybe we already have them?). We could be a conf champ with all 2 star recruits if they are all like Fletcher - no doubt a top notch MWC player (future nfl?) who was only a 2 star recruit.

Tiller's replacement named at Purdue. Tiller has said before he wanted to retire to Wyoming and he is still talking about all the Rainbrow Trout he wants to catch. It would be funny to have Tiller calling Glenn or Cole with offensive suggestions. I think Glenn is the long term answer at Wyo, i think his contract runs through Dec 2010, I think by then even some of his recent critics will agree. I think we also need to do whatever we can to keep Breske.

Like the last 2 recruiting classes just hope we are not missing out on some 3 star recruits by not approaching them at all, and hope we are improving faster than the rest of the conference.

GO POKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the board, and great first post!

I agree, Glenn will be a good head coach, but it's awfully tough to win and recruit in Laramie. Having Marboe back out hurts, but I'm sure the team will okay without him. Thanks for the post.

My worries have subsided, the coaching staff has received commitments from 2 speedsters in David James and James Caraway adding much needed speed and depth at the perimeter positions since my last post. I commend the coaching staff for finding top notch athletes where noone else seems to be looking, proving again that I worry too much, the scouting websites are far from perfect, and that I don't I know what I'm talking about. Both players sound like they can flatout fly and are great additions to another good recruiting class. Now how about a quality running back to add future depth behind RFr James Davis (my projected starter for 2009, 2010, 2011 seasons..... remember I have been proven to be wrong before).

Looks like 2 good back to back recruiting classes, future looks bright. As a Cowboys fan, I think I have reasonable expectations in going to a bowl game every few years, and winning a conference championship about once a decade. With 9 teams in the conference and 4 bowl tie-ins seems reasonable. Any thoughts?

The recruits in this class are better than the stars they've been given, IMO. Scout.com seems to have an affinity for bumping down everyone who commits to Wyoming by one star. It makes me mad, but then again, no matter how many stars they get, it doesn't change what they are in reality.

But just for the record, here are the players I would say are the 3-stars of this class (whether Rivals or Scout gives them 3 or not):

1.Tashaun Gipson -- CB from Dallas -- He's got speed, athleticism, size and the perfect support structure in place to become a star here. His brother, Marcel, already plays here, and he passed up offers from Baylor and Louisville to commit to the Pokes.

2. Orlando Arnold -- TE from Contra Costa CC -- Great athleticism but also great size. Great hands, experience, wonderful attitude, good grades, perhaps the all-around recruit and a terrific last-minute replacement for Wade Betschart.

3. James Caraway-- WR (tho he played RB in high school) from Topeka -- Blazing speed. Sub-4.35 40. The guy can flat-out move, and his highlight tape is ridiculous. Coaches want to get him the ball in a variety of ways. Could make an impact right away but definitely should be solid down the road. Terrific attitude. The only knock on him is his size--5-10, 170--but he should get a bit bigger here. He told me he thinks he can still get faster, too. Could also play CB if he has to and should be a great PR/KR.

4. Ben Parks -- Kicker from Argyle, Texas -- I know, I know, a kicker. But still, the guy's good. Scout ranks him as the 26th best kicker in the nation, and Wyoming pursued him even harder than a guy Chris Sailers ranked in the top 15 in the nation (Jordan Mannisto, who also had an offer from UW, which was basically used to pressure Parks into committing). Parks is a 3-star at his position, IMO. He also played LB in high school and had a whole bunch of tackles this year, so he's tough (6-foot-1, 188 pounds...not your average-sized kicker)...should help if anybody breaks one in kickoff situations.

5. Adam Barry-- Quarterback from Moorpark, Calif. -- Scout had him listed as a 3-star guy until he committed to Wyoming. Same with Parks. I think he'll redshirt this year and probably won't get much of a shot at playing until 2010, but he's got good fundamentals, a strong arm and is a smart kid. A lot of the analysts that saw him play in So Cal thought he was better than a lot of really highly-recruited kids down there (and there were a bunch of them).

6. Darin McDonald-- safety/wide receiver/cornerback from Cherry Creek HS in Colo. -- McDonald got drafted by the Phillies to play baseball right out of high school 2 years ago. He tried it for a while, and things didn't go quite the way he wanted, and now he's ready to try football. In the meantime, though, he added about 20 pounds of a muscle to a 6-foot-3 frame (now about 205 pounds). He used to run about a 4.48 40 (back in HS), but he told me on the phone that he thinks he's faster now. He had like 7 picks his senior year in high school. He could become a killer cover DB, but coaches are looking at him as a WR from what I hear. Either way, he's one of the few freshman who could come in right away and play this year. He's also another one with a terrific attitude. A friend of mine told me he saw him in the gymn up in Idaho over Christmas break and said he looked freakin' ripped.

7. Ben Durbin -- linebacker from Gilbert, Iowa. This is another one that had 3 stars until he committed to Wyoming. The guy is a freakin' tackling machine. He had more than 100 tackles and eight sacks as a junior and was named to the All-State team. As a senior, he had 143 tackles in just 9 games. He's super-excited about coming out to Wyoming. He committed way before his senior year even began (like back in July). Otherwise he probably would have landed a bunch of other offers. He was getting looked at by Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State and CSU. He's one of the gems of this class, IMO, and could very well have a Ward Dobbs-type career here.

There are others you could make an argument for (Kyle Magnuson, Dax Crum, David James, etc...), but those guys are the cream of the class, IMO. That's not to say that every one of them is going to come in and make an impact right away next year. I think guys like Barry and Durbin could use a redshirt to develop and learn the offense and defense, but they are terrific pick-ups for the future of the program.

So here's a question for ya cbeditor (great rundown and review, btw.. great read): When are the Cowboy coaches going to start recruiting Wyoming players? I know there's a few guys in Gillette, Casper, Evanston, etc that are probably D1 material.. what makes it so hard to go after these guys? Glenn seems to do most of his recruiting in Texas and Colorado, with a smattering of SoCal. I'd like to see the staff hit the state harder.. we might be one of the few schools that doesn't try to grab guys at home. Being a Worland native, I can say that I went to school with a couple of guys that were D1 material.. one went to Chadron, the other to Sioux Falls.

What's the word on Hetrick? Current rumor I'm hearing is Bob Cole had a meeting with the quarterbacks.. Hetrick was not included. Any truth to this, you suppose? I know there's some 1-AAs looking for a QB..

I know that Glenn tries to meet every year with every high school coach in Wyoming. It's not like UW doesn't ever go after in-state kids. It's just that most of the time, the Pokes' coaches want them to walk on and earn their scholarship later. I don't know why that is other than maybe they figure they should be able to take advantage of in-state tuition and the Hathaway scholarship, etc., and a scholarship offer to an in-state kid consequently doesn't mean as much as one to an out-of-stater.

Right now on the Pokes' roster there are a few Wyoming boys that I know of off the top of my head. Zeb Whipp (LB from Lander or somewhere over there) is one, and I heard he got put on scholarship. He was an absolute stud coming out of high school. Probably should have been put on scholarship from the very beginning, but the coaches lucked out and got away with a couple years without giving him a scholly. Will Isom (Safety from Lyman) walked on this past year. He'll be serving an LDS mission for the next two years but should be back for the 2010 season. I've heard that Glenn was very happy with Isom--he was a scout team player of the week one or two times this year. And isn't Chris Prosinski a Wyoming boy...from like Cody or Buffalo or somewhere up there? He made some pretty significant contributions this year.

Wyoming has had some real gems that UW either didn't go after hard enough or just didn't get. It's always tough when you see guys like the Poppinga brothers do what they're doing when you know they grew up in Wyoming. You hear all the rumors about McClain's staff not going after J.C. Carroll. I really don't know what to make of it all.

As far as Hetrick is concerned, the last thing I heard about him was that coaches were talking about moving him to WR. I think that's just a sugar-coated way of saying, "Ian, you're pretty much going to ride the bench next year because we have no place for you." The way he shied away from hits when he was playing QB this year I just don't think there's any way he could do much at WR. I've seen him on campus a couple times this semester (I think) so I'm pretty sure he's still here.

What I heard with the meeting thing is that when Cole first came down here, he met with all the quarterbacks except Hetrick. I don't know if that was because Hetrick chose not to come, couldn't come or wasn't invited.

Either way, I don't think we'll see much from him next season. And being a senior, having already played out his JUCO ball and having shown absolutely nothing in the few minutes of playing time he got last season, there's really nowhere for him to go, IMO.

Prosinski is from Buffalo.

I'd like to see more Wyo boys on the roster.. but that's just me. I'll post more later on this.. too late right now, and I'm still pumped from seeing the Blue Man Group tonight! :)

I would like to see more Wyo players as well, but I like to coaching staffs approach. If a kid is D1 material and getting offers from others at our level of play, then I would like UW to make an offer. But, if noone else is willing to use a scholarship on them, I think it is reasonable to hope the kid would walk-on and try to earn a scholly like Whipp. Mad respect for Whipp. But I would even take it one step further in that even if others were offering and UW wasn't, I would let my son go on recruiting trips to other schools just so he could recruit the other recruits to UW, and gladly pay any tuition not covered by his academics. Dirty pool, old man, I like. A great walk-on program can do a lot for a program, see Nebraska in the late 80s, early 90s. I just want what is best for UW - the best coaches, facilities, recruits, and walk-ons we can get.

In fact I have a new plan, all graduating football players in Wy will now go work in the oil & gas fields during this boom, earn five years worth of scholarship money while working half days for 2 years, lifting weights, running windsprints, eating creatine covered steaks with weight gaining shakes, and reviewing game films during the other half of the day. Then go to Laramie with their "Oilfield" scholarship money in the bank, walk-on, and pay any necessary tuition. It would be like our own working mission program. I think it should become law. Sorry, I have gone off the deep end, I must leave now.
