What are your rankings for our current UW hoops players as of now??
Below is mine- feel free to add your own or make fun of mine....

1. Larry Nance Jr.
2. Josh Adams
3. Derek Cooke Jr.
4. Riley Grabu
5. Charles Hankerson Jr.
6. Jason Mcmanamen
7. Alan Herndon
8. Matt Sellers
9. Jeremy Lieberman
10. Alexander Aka Gorski
11. Jonathon Barnes
12. Jack Bentz

1. Nance- pretty obvious what he means to this team

2. Adams- I think he is our one guy we can say heres the ball go get a bucket or make something happen from the perimeter. He is also our best perimeter defender and an elite offense, Adams' all around game just keeps getting better. The sky is the limit for him

3. Hankerson Jr.- He has been great all year, behind the arc, second in assists, clutch shots, and good D! I am so glad he came back and retooled his game and is shining in his role

4. Grabau- He is our glue guy.. He always has the same demeanor whether he is on fire, or in a slump (like recently) you can't tell by looking at him. He makes great passes, and can't say enough about his FTs! Those have won us games

5. Cooke- DC being 5 isn't a knock on him at all, he just is more unique. He can't play against certain teams because of his limited basketball experience, against Boise we went Herndon late because of free throws and floor spacing. Cooke is much improved and having a good year! We aren't where we are now without him.

6. McManamen- What a difference a red shirt year makes! He has so much confidence this year and is shooting great, and has some clutch shots! He plays very solid defense and is ready to step in and start if called upon, which has happened a couple times. I still get nervous when he tries to dribble with his left though

7. Herndon- Herndon and Mcmanamen could be switched. Herndon has been a productive rebounder, scorer and defender. He is in at the end to knock down free throws! He has been so instrumental in fixing our depth issue we have had in the past.

8. Lieberman- He has proven he can handle the rock. Shy has trust in Bentz and Grabau due to age, but this kid is going to be good and we should see more of him as the season progresses.

9. Sellers- What an improvement this guy made, and kudos to him! I was one of the first to dog on him but I never will again! Sellers is all about the team, he just wants to do anything to end up on the court some how some way and he has lead us in scoring twice! Good for you Matt, we will need if we are going to make a run

10. Bentz- Bentz has played valuable minutes in conference play and it is clear Shy trusts him, Bentz has improved each year and its just that much more depth. Good for him!

11. Gorski- I love this kids game! I think he will be very good, unfortunately with his injury and our depth he is buried a little bit, but he can flat shoot and will be fun to watch!

12. Barnes- I don't think he is quite there yet, his body is ready, I have never seen a freshman built like that! He will be good if he is working his tail off and learning from Larry, DC, Sellers, and his coaches. The players know how to coach freshman at this point. I think Barnes has the ability to be very good if he puts in the extra effort

I don't really want to rank them, since they have different roles and are in different stages of their development. However, great info from gopokes1399.

I like our current rotation. Herndon's ability to step in and play crunch time minutes in big games has been one of the most pleasant surprises this year. One of the things that killed us last year, even before Nance got hurt, was that we didn't have any frontcourt bench players that could be trusted to play against top level opponents. The result was Jerron Granberry playing the 4. I give Jerron a ton of credit for taking one for the team and playing hard, but we got absolutely murdered on the glass when we played small like that.

My one disappointment in the current rotation is that we didn't redshirt Barnes. He hasn't played any minutes that mattered this year and if we do need another big after Herndon, Sellers would be the call. JB is physically ready at this level, but he does not have much experience. He picked up the game late and played on some bad HS teams. I think he could be an impact player as an upperclassmen and we will regret not having him for an extra year at that point.

I agree completely. I had a lengthy discussion at work about this and I cannot think of a reason why he shouldn't have been red shirted. Coach knows best I guess

Coach Shyatt has said repeatedly that it is a player's decision on whether or not they will redshirt. The staff advises them of what their season will be like if they don't but it is ultimately left up to the player. JB must have decided that he'd rather ride the pine this season than redshirt.

Shyatt mentioned in an interview earlier in the year that the staff elected to only redshirt one of the young bigs (Williams or Barnes). I can't remember his exact phrasing, but he definitely alluded to the balancing of classes with a bunch of freshman coming in next year as well.

Of course, I have no idea if the staff wanted Barnes to redshirt or not, only that Shyatt mentioned they only wanted to redshirt one of them.

If Sellers gets hurt or god forbid, Cooke or Nance.. We are going to need to play Barnes, at least a little bit here and there. I think Shy elected to not red shirt Barnes for this reason. Since he isn't red shirting we have been able to play him a little and get him some experience, that way his first time ever on the court isn't in conference play and filling in for an injury. That is a lot of pressure for a true freshman. I wish we could've red shirted him, I just don't know if it was in the cards to red shirt both of our freshman bigs

Do you have to declare a redshirt early in the season, or are you able to redshirt a kid that didn't play in enough games when the season is over?

I played college baseball and redshirted as a freshmen a few games in. It may differ by sport & division?

I think you can play a little in basketball and still red-shirt.
My only reason for thinking this is that if you look at Wadells career stats it shows 5 years...but I could be wrong.

I know football if you take the field at all you burned the possible redshirt.

The only time I believe you can do this is for a hardship waiver.

This question seems to come up a lot. The answer is always the same and is fairly straight forward.

If you play even 1 second of a basketball game, you have lost a year of eligibility. The only way around this is if you have an injury or illness which leads to you missing a significant portion of the season. You can apply for a "medical redshirt" in that case, and that case only…which is what Waddell did.

You don't actually declare a redshirt. The rule is that you have 5 years to play 4 season of eligibility. If you go through your first year and don't play, you still have 4 years to play 4 seasons. So then this is what we refer to as using your redshirt, but this is just an imaginary term used to describe someone who is a year ahead of their actual playing season (I.E. a redshirt freshman = sophomore). But there is no paperwork, process, NCAA hoops to jump through, etc. you either play or you don't.

So the coaches may decide not to play someone at the beginning of the year in order to have them for 4 more seasons, but if they have to put them in at some point due to injury, ineligibility, etc. they can do so at any time they see fit.

And yes, as TheRealUW said, if you step foot on the field/court for even 1 second, you have used a season of eligibility.

I always thought that in basketball if you played in less than 15% or something of the games, you could redshirt, but that may only apply to injuries. It typically came down to playing in less than 6 games.

It should be noted that you can play in games and still redshirt if you were granted the medical or hardship waiver.

Medical: Tyran Finley playing in season opener against Nebraska, tearing ACL. Apply for medical red shirt and get year of eligibility back.

Hardship: Jerron Granberry started senior season at North Florida and father passed away putting him into a funk (understandably so) and decided to apply for Hardship waiver, to get year of eligibility back.
