1. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Both teams seemed to be playing on roller skates as neither team could keep control of the ball. The amount of turnovers prevented the game from having any sense of rhythm or flow. Especially in the 1st half where there was a total of 25 turnovers (16 SJS/ 9 WYO). The 2nd half wasn't quite as poor with there being only a total of 10 turnovers, 5 by each team. I got the sense that although we were playing hard our focus was more on the MTN West tournament than it was on San Jose State.
2. Morris Marshall is one unlucky son of a gun. He just can't seem to stay healthy for any extended length of time so he can work himself into the rotation. It's really unfortunate that he never got much of a chance, because I really believe that he has the ability to play at this level and really help us out. I truly feel sorry for him.
3. Mcmanamen ended his Wyoming career with a solid but unspectacular day. I found it odd that he was pulled so quickly in the second half (only 2 min into the half). I didn't necessarily disagree with the decision in a vacuum, for his man had just beaten him for an easy hoop. It just seems like senior night was a weird time to punish him for something that has seemingly gone unpunished all season.
4. It was nice to see Dalton get the start. Unfortunately he missed several easy shots around the rim, and while the whole team was turnover happy, I thought Dalton was the main instigator. At some point Edwards needs to tighten the reigns on Dalton and not allow him to bring the ball up the court. He charges up the court like his hair is on fire while wearing blinders. Everyone else in the arena can sense he's about to turn the ball over but him.
5. The sloppy play overshadows a pretty good shooting performance. 50% from the field/52.4% from three/75% from the line. Granted the free throw percentage is a little misleading as up until the last few minutes of the game we had shot mediocre from the stripe. But quietly we have been very solid from the three point line the last four games, 49-112 or 43.7%.
6. The PG play we saw in this game from the combination of Lieberman/Kelley was easily the best we've seen this season and nothing sort of extraordinary. I've been critical of both these guys for a good portion of the season, but I've got to give credit where credit is due. Here are their combined numbers. 40 minutes/20 points/5 rebounds/4 assists/4 steals/1 turnover/60% from the field/57% from the arc/4-4 from the line. I'm not convinced either one of them are the future of the PG position but I do know we can win a lot of games with the production we saw in the San Jose State game.
7. Herndon had a very good game. He may never be the beast on the boards we desire, but he does a lot of other things remarkably well. Case in point he had 3 assists/3 blocks/0 turnovers and added an efficient 13 points. He is one of the top shot blockers in the MTN West and in the last 9 games he is 21-42 (50%) from the arc.
8. I haven't given up on Naughton yet. I still believe that he has the chance to be one of the better big's in the MTN West. He got the ball twice in the post, both times he had good position but couldn't finish. Obviously finishing is paramount, but I still see a lot of potential there.
9. I really hope the plan isn't for Gorski to start in Mcmanamen's place next year. I see him as only a rotational player. A guy that comes in off the bench and if he's hot that particular night he plays a significant role, but if he's cold, he sees limited action. He's just too streaky as a shooter and he doesn't do enough of anything else to justify starters minutes. Lieberman/Kelley are on their way to proving me wrong, hopefully Gorski can add his name to that list because I'm fairly confident he will begin next season as a starter.
10. Adams remains in the dog house, and it's frustrating. He's not without his warts but he can do things on the court that some of our other guys just can't do. Hopefully it gets worked out because I think he could be a difference maker for us not only next year but also in the MTN West tournament.
11. This is the 1st game in the last 11 where we attempted more free throws than our opponents. As a matter of fact in the 18 conference games we've played this year we've only had more free throw attempts than our opponents 4 times (AFA/USU/@SJS/SJS). Is it a coincidence this only occurs when were playing those programs that are perceived as beneath us in the MTN West?
12. Moemeka plays a lot like Omogbo from CSU. Unfortunately Omogbo can play 35 minutes and only pick up 1 foul, where as Moemeka picks up 4 fouls in 9 minutes.
