Question on D

Is Bohl running a Tampa 2 in Wyoming?

NDSU hasn't run the Tampa 2 for about 10 years. I'm not sure why that keeps getting associated with Bohl. At NDSU he ran a zone blitz scheme similiar to what Pittsburgh has done over the years but out of the 4-3 and not 3-4. At NDSU our front 4 was typically so good we only blitzed to mix it up or when needed. Hell our front 4 at NDSU manhandled CSU in Fort Collins 2-3 years ago when we played them.

I was looking at your dline, and a little shocked at how small it was. Is that what the last scheme was dictated from? No way in hell he could have ran defense the way he wanted too at NDSU if the dline was that small. You're strength training coach needs to get them to start eating seconds.

Looks like a base Tampa 2 to me but the corners don't jam. I have only watched 1 game as internet would allow, so I could be wrong. However it looks pretty prototypical tampa 2 with linebacker dropping back into the middle zone.

Honestly though, until I get a game recorded and slow it down, I might be wrong.

One classic symptom of the T2 or a lot of the 4-3 zone type defenses is miss assignmemts lead to big problems. I think are seeing a lot of that right now which is making the D look worse than it probably is. Even playing perfectly, I'm not sure how good our d would be, but it would definitely be better.

I'm a broken record. Send the defensive staff down to Fort Worth in the offseason and learn from Garry Patterson's 4-2-5 defense. They taught it to Boise. Works pretty damn good when you get some big guys on the line and focus on faster guys in the backfield.

As for the Tampa 2 - I'm not sure what we are running, but we seem pretty decent in getting the backfield occassionally, doing some run stopping, followed by chasing a reciever with a 20 yard lead down the field - on his way to a TD.

Was I hallucinating off Cali's finest grass or did our corners kinda just take 2 steps forward after the snap then hesitate while the wr's blow by them on straight wide open fly routes down the field? It's like they all thought a safety would be there in the zone but there was nobody behind them. Then I'd see 2 WIDE open receivers on the same side at times. It was like the qb had too many wide open options to throw to try to confuse him. Then he wasn't confused at all. Someone said opposing qb's might have to ice their arms after the game right? Throwing for 350+ will def get tiresome. The tackling was a SHITSHOW, but kinda funny. I'm describing our team to my coworker who went to LSU and she's just fucking laughing so much, but then we laugh together. Our Pokes are at least good for some jokes with friends right now and vivid moments of football defensive failure. I mean what D are we running???? TRASH D that ain't even D rated D

Wyoming Defensive Grade F- :With admission please give fans a free beer and one free brown n gold blindfold when we enter the stadium to use while the D is on the field until further notice.

Can we get to F+ next game? A TURNOVER? A TURNOVER? A FUCKING TURNOVER? A SACK? SACKS? LOSS OF YARDAGE? JUST ANYTHING? ANYTHING? 2 STOPS? 2 STOPS PLEASE?

NIGHTMARE D :brick: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

As much I question Stanard and the T2, I will say, that on quite a few plays, it looks like the kids are looking around and more worried about getting settled into their spot than they are playing football. I do think that is contributing to our problems on D. I'd like to see us use the man (like a cover 1) a little more with this young group where they can shift their focus to just stop their guy and play football.

I'm not advocating this every play or anything, but add a wrinkle to it.

However, IMO, one of our biggest problems and Leach is going to tear us up with is the lack of jam by our corners. If they can get outside on the fly routes, then the slots can do anything they want. Gonna be along day on the Palouse.

Cosmic, I'm happy you started posting on the football forum

Don't know how long I will man. Puts me outta my element. Look how negative it turns me. I'm more of a positive guy too, but Poke's football is like hyperdrive back to the darkside. I probably need to go back to not watching Pokes football and focusing on my life much sooner rather then later. I had to at least post about what I saw with the time I wasted though. I like chatting with the wyonation crew always.

Not a huge fan of the T2 defense but that doesn't mean go to 3-4. there are other 4-3 defenses other than the T2. I think we run a version of the T2 but whatever it is it isn't working. Don't know if its scheme or personel. I hope personel czue that can get better but Im worried its scheme and the DC. I also am a big fan of the TCU 4-2-5 but I think we are staying with this scheme for a while so better get used to it.

For this game we need to get very aggresive and get pressure on the QB and on the receivers. Star going for picks and press the receivers. Whats the worse that could happen? we get burned and the WR is wide open. That happens anyway and WSU offense is gonna feed off of our secondary. Get pressure and maybe just maybe we can get a turnover or two(two might be asking too much)

What I want (and what we need to be successful) is a LB or 2 that's actually the size of a linebacker, maybe throw in some dynamic receivers that are 6'6" and by far the fastest guys on the field, etc.
The linebackers will come.....hopefully.

The receivers? That's unrealistic, no matter what level of college football you're at. How many 6'6" receivers do you know who were the fastest player on their team?
It's more realistic than you seeing a post without feeling the need to come in and try to dissect every little thing and annoy everyone in the process.

Obviously. Dude. There's 11 guys on the field, typically 2-4 of them are down field trying to get open using their unique skill sets. I get it.
Were you being sarcastic about the 6'6 receiver as the fastest guy? I hope so, because not even teams like Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, or Michigan State have guys like that. Even Malcolm Floyd was only 6'4.
And Malcolm wasn't a real burner...

I definitely don't disagree with you at this point. You can't shift gears now. I suspect, or at least hope, they plan to mix it up with some modified looks of the T2; in other words use the T2 as a package of our 4-3 but not the entire D scheme. However, I think we are stuck in the base package until guys figure that out.

I'm with everyone else on the 4-2-5. It wouldn't be a huge leap in personnel and could be a nice wrinkle to shift between that and 4-3 schemes.

Whatever it is they run now or in the future, it isn't going to be effective if players continue to miss tackle after tackle. That's not a coaching/schematic issue, that's on the players.

I'd also argue that team speed is still a big concern on this side of the ball. Hopefully, that comes with time.

One could argue that tackling can to some degree be coached. Tech....pursuit angles...guys confident in their assignment...more hats to the ball and not on the ground. With the youth and lack of size.... :? one would hope speed shouldn't be an issue.....
