Past toughest schedules

I've seen this debated before, some actually thinking that DC has had an easier schedule than past coaches. It appears he has actually had 2 of the 3 toughest schedules in the history of the program.

Wins will happen, losses will happen, but one way to measure the improvement on how competitive the team is week in and week out. It appears to me, that we are trending towards getting more competive and less likely to get blown out than when he took over. As long as we continue to improve, I will be a DC fan.... and beating the sheep always helps :)

In 1996 we lost 2 games, 1 by 4 pts, the other in OT by 3. Now, that was a competitive team, that had a chance to win every weekend. I look forward to those days again. Once we are competitive in every game, and challenging for a conference title, then we will be back where we belong. GO POKES.

Well, that was a dumb thing to post. Stupid posts like that where you give something in our athletic program any sort of credit is supposed to be left to me so every nay sayer out there can call me an idiot.

But really, everyone talked about how hard our schedule was when we were playing 3 Top 5 teams in the same season with a total of like 5 Top 25 teams, but now everyone just wants to say that DC should be fired because of the Mr. Howdy Doody thing. No one remembers that we have played some big time programs every year and it is hard to just magically beat them.
Texas, Nebraska, Boise St. TCU, Utah.
I think Nebraska can be our first signature win under DC this season. They lost a lot of key players, and the team has to be hungry after last season, They did afterall finish the season 3-1 I think.
Plus DC has a pattern of having a good year followed by a bad. Time for a good year, actually time for a great year!
Go Pokes!

This.....turned out to be a prophetic article. Its not about Smith, SOS, or CDC.....it all comes down to turnover ratio. When it goes in UW's favor, they're a bowl team. When it doesn't, they could lose to anyone. 2013 will be the same case. Anywhere from 4-8 to 8-4 based on which way the ball bounces.....that's the way it has been since day 1 of the CDC era.

J-Rod you keep saying that 8-4 is the best we can do.
Well I think 10 is totally possible. Hell 12 is possible. For anyone.
We almost won the MWC 2 season ago. Had Brett Smith not been taken out by Tank Carder, we might have won that game.
You say that Brett Smith can not do it all by himself, but if the team can hold themselves in it, then Brett Smith can win it from there.
I won't say that we will win 10 games but I find it hard to believe that the best we can do is 8 wins.
Why not upset Nebraska? People say that we need a better D if we wanna win all these games, and yeah they are right but to just pull one upset you don't need a great D, you just need luck sometimes.

What if Smith gets sacked hard against Nebraska and sustains another concussion.....all of a sudden 8 wins sounds psycho, let along beating Nebraska. This "what if?" or "anything can happen" "why not" ambiguous argument can go many different directions.....

I assure you, even 8 wins is generous. Non-Wyoming fans probably wouldn't have the team anywhere near 8-10 wins. They went 4-8 last season, and proved all the off-season hype was not warranted. One man cannot do it all.....(unless you are playing UNM/UNLV)

Lucky for us, we get CSU, and NM who are both teams that Brett Smith can go out and win by himself.
Brett Smith will never lose to CSU!
In fact, I think DCs record against CSU is the only reason he hasn't been fired.

UNM will be tougher this year
I disagree. Those 1st year triple option teams always frustrate defenses......as 2012 went on, people caught on to UNM and they reverted back to their awful Locksley-type teams. I expect the boomerang to come back around the other end in 2013. There is a reason they had to adopt that offense.

Except for BSU. For some reason, Peterson refuses to have the defense practice against the triple option.

Yep, they even tore Fresno apart too. Hawaii got destroyed.....but that was all in the 1st half of the season......once people had film of them running that offense, it went downhill. Nobody even knew that's what they were doing going into 2012!!! Bob Davie kept that completely secret....he benefited for 5-7 games, that's it. It wont last into 2013.

That's true, but there is no guarantee that they will run the triple option again this year. The coach may have run that until he got some personnel to support another offense. He did get some good recruits from what I have read.

All very true....I'm just not buying into too much of the hype. They are turning out to be this years trendy pick in the MWC (last year was Wyoming), and while they simply cannot be any worse than they've been recently, I still think they will struggle to be bowl eligible.

I was merely saying that we can't chalk them up. CDCs second year got beat by locksley. I'm not sure what Fairchild was doing passing that last year but thy should have beat us too. We are not the team that can just chalk up any win, to anybody.

My bad, I wasn't singling you out. I'm more talking about some fans on the MWCBoard who think UNM could win 8 games this year. Sorry, nobody adopts the triple option because they are on the verge of greatness. You adopt it because you suck. And agreed, UW cannot overlook anyone. After Cal Poly last year, there is no way this team will be looking past anyone.

I agree turnovers have been a huge factor in wins vs losses, but what I was trying to say is that outside of wins and losses how do we look. His first yr the team pretty much pulled out a close win every chance they had (7) and seemed to get blown out of all the losses (6)? Fast forward a few years and we had a season were we had a chance to win (10) games? And the games we were not in were less frequent and not as lop-sided (2). Overall I still think we are getting more competitive every week. I hope we can catch a few breaks this year to make up for last yrs rotten luck, but even if we don't I think we will still be competitive in hopefully every game.

I agree with this.
And even in year 1, that team played with some confidence. Remember the game at Utah? They were Top 25 and we had the lead on them going into the 4th quarter and lost the game in the final minutes.
That was 1 close game we didn't pull out, but just shows what happens when a team THINKS they can win. Hell the Fresno St. game in the NM Bowl was proof of that as well. Funny how since DC has been here our rush D has been awful, yet one of the best memories from DC being here is our D stopping Ryan Matthews 3 outta 4 plays on that goal line stand, and stopping the QB sneak too.

Last I saw, there was quite a bit more to this team than Brett Smith. We have 85+ players on the team and some very good receiving corps.

During the offseason, we recruited some good size to the defensive lines and offensive lines. I'm going to make a bold prediction - we win somewhere between 0 and 13 games this season. Frankly, I think the cards stack up quite well for us to have a great season. After last year, history shows that we could have a terrible season too.
