Interesting article. What is Wyotech trying to hide? While I've always seen the stereotype with Wyotech in Laramie and often agree with it, I would hate to see it shut down.

It's all about the ability for students to get financial aid.

Many for profit schools are not what is known as regionally accredited, like UW, LCCC, CSU, etc. They have been using other national accreditation agencies to prop them up and allow the use of federal financial aid for their students. Well, now the government is cracking down on many of them for the practices they have been using for recruiting and keeping their students eligible for this financial aid, that benefits the school in more ways than the student.

Students go heavily in debt with these for profit schools and have little to show for it in the end. This student in this article talks about the possibility of being an RN. That's great. I hope the student can do it. But, the credits accumulated with high student loan debt at schools like Wyotech may not transfer to a regionally accredited school that offers a nursing program such as LCCC or UW. Many of these students are getting screwed.

RN? I thought those guys became diesel techs-etc and got high paying field specific jobs?

WyoTech has been on the decline since Corinthian Colleges bought them some years back, in more ways than one. WyoTech used to be growing and was constantly sponsoring events in Laramie. When CCI bought them, they started up schools/slapped the WyoTech name on schools in California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New York drastically cutting into the students that would normally come here. Also when CCI took over, they pulled WyoTech's backing of nearly all local events. The only thing they kept was requiring students to do community service. Not to mention since the lack of students, more and more of the people that worked out there have been laid off over the years. Instructors, admissions people, other offices...

My grandmother worked out there for 18 years before retiring (having worked in the mail room and admissions office), and when she did, WyoTech was already on the decline.

I agree with you and unfortunately Laramie would probably be better off without WyoTech as it is currently owned and compiled. I'd say that a better education could be had at a JUCO at about 1/4 the cost.

It is sickening that for-profit colleges such as Corinthian Colleges turn profits based solely upon the ability to secure government backed student loans with the knowledge that many/most of their graduates will default on such loans and that the edcuation provided will not lead to a better job.

Oh and about 82% of the revenue that Corinthian receives comes from federal student aid programs. Should the government really be supporting these publicly traded stocks???

Agree. It's a huge issue. Complete waste of taxpayer dollars.

Stop subsidizing poorly run private vocational schools and strengthen worthwhile programs at public CC/JC's.

Completely agree. There are certain things that go to hell when shareholders dictate what they want over the actual customers - especially when all the competition gets bought up so there's not much of an actual "choice" available.

Another random higher education problem:
