OT: OSU

Did anyone notice the Cowboy logo on the OK State helmets last night? Eerily similar to our beloved one I'd say.

OSU has kind of always had the cowboy. When they dip into Steamboat territory is when they need a beating

Isn't there a big debate among the two schools as to who had it first? I have read that we "borrowed" it from OSU. But I've also read the opposite.

When did WYO use that versus OSU? I haven't been able to find that. I know OSU Pistol Pete named mascot was adopted in 1958; they licensed the Pistol Pete character in the 80s; and WYO and OSU came to some sort of agreement in the 90s about it.

However, I've never been able to figure out when WYO first used the name Pistol Pete or the character Pistol Pete. I do think WYO was using it officially prior to OSU's licensing of the character.

For some reason, I've always found the topic interesting. NMSU also uses a Pistol Pete. OSU's Pistol Pete is based on real guy named Frank Eaton. I haven't been to find as much on WYO's but would be interested if anyone knows.

I know we had to quit using the Pistol Pete logo for several years under an agreement with OSU. Once that expired, we have been able to use the logo again. The Pistol Pete logo has always been OSU's primary logo whereas Steamboat has been ours.

While OSU can claim Pistol Pete, we can claim "Cowboys" and "Pokes". Why? We've always been the Cowboys. OSU used to be the Tigers (hence their colors).

Actually OSU was originally Oklahoma A & M Aggies...never the Tigers. Interestingly....OSU changed the school name the same year Fort Fart did.... 1957.

BTW, that's why CSU's mascot is called Cam (Colorado A & M).

Thus your history lesson for the day, gang.

Normally I get sick and tired of hearing about how things were back in the day Wyokie, ;) but that is pretty cool.

I never knew that the sheep mascot is Cam because of Colorado A&M, but then again, never really cared about what the sheeps background was.

I guess I assumed it was "Cam the Ram" because it rhymes.

Nope. Its because CSU wants to remember the fact it was originally Colorado A & M.

Helps to read media guides. I have a old (1995) CSU media guide.

I truly believe in the idea that knowledge is power.

Even more OT; if you could go back in time, would change Pistol Pete? If so, to what?

Buffalo Bill? Cowboy Joe? ???

Buffalo Bill would work except two things...

a. he's buried near Denver which of course pisses off most native Wyomingites especially those living in the Big Horn Basin.

b. He's not native of Wyoming. He was born in Iowa and spent part of his life in Nebraska/Kansas areas. He only moved over to Wyoming the last 20 or so years of his life.

I thought Cowboy Joe was the Shetland pony UW has.

Yes I would chance it because I find pistols offensive.

Oh boy, I've been in Oregon too long.

Just kidding, I really find the word Pete offensive. Short for Peter. AKA weiner.

 But all joking aside, I don't really see a better nickname than Pistol Pete.
Shotgun Steve? That might seem kind of cheesy now, but if his name was always Shotgun Steve would it still sound weird?
