OT: Expanding the Mountain West

When the next phase of conference realignment comes, lets say the MWC is looking for new schools to join. Who do you target?

Personally, I would try to get Gonzaga and Wichita State to join as non-football members. We'd be stretching the MW footprint a bit, but I think they would be very good additions to the Mountain West.

After that, a few schools I would look to include NMSU, UTEP, Montana and dare I say NDSU.

Gonzaga is a pipe dream unfortunately...they won't leave the religious WCC.

No thank you on trips to Las Cruces. I value my life, and the lives of all things Wyoming Cowboys.

UTEP would be a great basketball add. Some fans want to extract SJSU and invite them to the MW altogether.

I wish we had Zaga to be the 12 member. Hawaii for football, Zaga for everything else.
Witchita State would be good though.

I want the MWC to focus on hoops.

i just dont get why some folks want to add wichita and gonzaga to mwc. i sure believe that wyo gets an invitation from Big 12 will be more realistic than adding gonzaga and wichita.

There's a big difference between want and reality. Do I want us to be able to add Gonzaga and Wichita St.? Hell yeah, they would add a lot to the conference. Would they actually come if invited? At this point, probably not.

Utep, Louisiana Tech or New Mex. St.

Utep had good history in the WAC, now a little mediocre, but would help build the conf strength.

LT has legitimized their sports programs in football and basketball. I think they would be a decent fit.

NMSU a big fish in a small pond, but once you get them out of the pond you realize that they are quite small compared to the bigger conf lake trout. They've had good basketball history as of late, but it is hard telling if they would have the same success in a bigger conf. And their football is abysmal.

Expand an already broke MWC, yeah, great idea. :?

The goal is to increase our budget.

Hell, even if we get raided, we won't add unless absolutely necessary to maintain conference status. There isn't a team on this planet in the G5 ranks, including byu, that would increase our bottom line or decrease our expenses.

If the MWC expands, it will be because of catastrophic events and "it won't matter anyway".

Bingo. :thumb:

Bring back BYU. One douche bag (CSU) is not enough for a conference. You need two.

NO EFFING WAY. I will paraphrase Dave Walsh at the end of the last BYU football game "I am so glad I don't have to come back here again."

I'm not sure about how Gonzaga feels about it, but Wichita State is actively pursuing it, or were for a while at least. I introduced the idea to their board about six years ago, and they love the idea. After their rival Creighton joined the Big East they really got excited about it. In fact, they think the MWC is their best chance at getting out of the Missouri Valley. They even considered adding football back to make it happen. In fact, they were more enthusiastic about the idea than TCU was when I introduced the idea of them joining the MWC to their board and we all know what happened there.

I think we should drop SJSU for all sports but football and add Wichita in their place.

Wichita wants to join the MWC and that isn't just message board chatter. I've seen threads on their board that detailed how the athletics department has tried to join the MWC. The first time they tried the MWC told them that we weren't adding partial members. In fact, I'm about 99 percent positive that's the most recent communication they've had with MWC leadership.

I'm all for dumping SJSU two RPI anchor games into the Big West and replacing them with two consistent top 20 RPI games in Wichita State. This needs to happen.

I would support this. Budget neutral at worse.

If we dropped SJSU 300 plus R.P.I. games and replaced them with Wichitas 20 RPI games we would be a no doubt three bid league with a chance for four.

This needs to happen. I don't know why and how we panicked into adding SJSU but it was a mistake. Leave them in for football if we have to, but Wichita State is always good at basketball and baseball. Their olympic sports crush SJSU.

#6...the rank of the San Fran-Oakland-San Jose TV market...it's $$$ plain and simple.

We didn't really think about it did we?

Pretty sure that Stanford and Cal dominate the Bay Area.

Just because SJSU is in that market doesn't mean they command that market.
Maybe I'm wrong though, and the Big12 will add DU to get that Denver market.

Oh yeah, I agree, SJSU doesn't have a big following, but I'm sure the prospect of such a big TV market had the bigs in the conference offices drooling. I mean joining the MWC would certainly make SJSU better and more popular, right?

Where's the love for western state? Regis? Colorado Mesa? Devry?

lol in all seriousness, I see Denver coming on to replace San Jose state if we come to that, but the conference won't be changing anytime soon

Yeah definitely. Compared to the WAC for sure.

And they ended with the #3 recruiting class in the MWC for football so....

They just need a basketball team now...

If we still had the MWC TV channel, sure. But without that, whatever size a TV market is doesn't have nearly the importance.
