Kinda surprised I haven't seen this topic here yet......its a pretty big deal. Could alter college sports for good. Jim Delaney has threatened to switch to the DIII model (non-scholarship) if O'Bannon wins, but that is laughable at best. Fresno State's President threatened to drop football altogether! Hyperbole is running rampant, but nonetheless......this is a serious matter that would effect Wyoming along with countless other schools.

Thoughts?

I've got a solution: Drop athletic scholarships altogether and pay the players what an 18 hour course load would cost. You could pay some more than others (i.e. starting QB makes more than backup linebacker), but they would still be getting compensated without breaking the University.

ok so hear me out. I am a DIV 3 coach, so I fully admit my bias from the beginning. But what if, as Delaney (and trust me...if there is a guy that I despise more than Delaney, I would have no idea who it is...can't stand him) suggests DIV 1,2 and NAIA schools all go to a NO SCHOLARSHIP scenario? How would that affect the system we currently have??

Negatives:
1) And this is a big one...it closes the door to post high school education to A LOT of the top athletes in the country due to the inability to pay for school.
2) More debt for students coming out of college.
3) Academic standards would probably go down?

Positives:
1) I believe the deteriorating culture that permeates our kids today ("I'm a victim, where is my handout?) would begin to diminish and student-athletes would begin to appreciate the education they are receiving, the experience they are getting, and the opportunity to continue playing the sport they love.

2) Parity in college sports would increase (I think?). Playing time and EDUCATION would become the driving force behind recruiting. Which is WHAT IT SHOULD BE!!! Right now, NCAA football is a semi-pro league that feeds the NFL. It serves what? 100...200...300 athletes? That's it! I believe a focus on Academics would be emphasized more which in the long run would be better for the student athlete.

OK OK OK spoken like a D3 guy I know. I am not even sure what my argument is or if it makes sense. Obviously, the only way it would have a chance would be if the NCAA mandated it AND NAIA mandated it. Couldn't do it any other way I don't think, and regardless things would change dramatically.

Delaney & his greedy cronies (the bcs) brought college athletics to this point. Look at the money involved - look at the University of Texas' athletic budget - unbelievable! What athlete wouldn't want a piece of that pie? But there is a monumental difference between a school like that and the University of Wyoming, who are both in the same NCAA division (D 1) of college athletics. It is a sad day that college athletics became so focused on money and some schools think they are entitled to more than anyone else.

Other than the "pay for play" thing (I mean these kids get full ride schollies, they should put them to good use), I don't see this affecting schools outside of the Big 5 much, if any. Wyoming sells jerseys with a player's numbers on them, but unles they're custom made, they don't have the names or images. And the video games, well, our players on the game are lucky to be the same ethnicity as the ones in real life, let alone resemble them.

The Big 5 though, this could potentially ruin them.
