One last baseball thread...

There's a difference between being cheap and being broke. You gotta make money to spend money.

If you're reeeeeaally serious about this, you should start a proposal right now to present to UW. Get out, do some surveys, figure out the logistics of building a team, do some research and make it happen. Griping to us won't get it done. It's like the guy who is always complaining about the Mayor's policies, but is never seen in City Hall doing something about it.

THIS Plus if we bring back baseball we'll have to add another women's sport due to Title IX which is a FEDERAL law which means more money needs to be spent.

Way I see it is this if somehow UW gets the money to bring back baseball, we should take that money and put it in football so that program can thrive and get more money so we can spend it on brining back baseball, softball, whatever. Save football then go after adding sports.

I'll also throw in 2 cents concerning the weather. Yes the pacific northwest isn't warm and sunny, but it is NOT cold. It is generally always mild and temperate with no sun and constant drizzle and consistently so. I've lived here for 3 years and have had to scrape my windows two or three times and have never brought out my winter coat.

Exactly. Beav points out how Gonzaga and AFA didn't have first home game until mid-March. Colorado Springs isn't a long distance from Laramie, but the weather is noticeably warmer there. In Laramie, no administrator worth his salt would schedule a home game until early-April. That would mean (with a start date of Feb. 15 and MWC tourney on May 22) that you spend the first half of the season on the road. This is both expensive and inconvenient.

Since when are people such big pansies about playing in a little bit of cold?

To think that it is too cold to play until april is such a weak mentality.

I'm not arguing that we can play in cold weather, I've lived in Wyoming my entire life and have certainly played a number of sporting events in cold weather. All I'm saying is, there is no administrator in the country that would schedule a baseball game in Wyoming in early to mid-March because there is a high possibility it would be cancelled which would mean money lost. It's not a matter of mental toughness, it's a matter of college athletic administration, that's just how things are done, period.

But again, as many other posters have said, weather is a moot point until you find the money to support not only baseball, but also funnel the same amount into an existing female sport or add another.

Do you guys think wrestling will be a college sport in the future? Or do you think since it is no longer an olympic sport, that it will die out?

I'm not instigating anything, or saying we cut wrestling for baseball like U of Oregon did, but am just wondering.

After it is no longer an olympic sport, will there be a higher level than college?

A valid question. If wrestling remains a non-Olympic sport, I could see it being dropped by a number of college athletic departments. However, I'm not sold on it being kept off the Olympic schedule for the long-term. I wouldn't be surprised if it is reintroduced as the "wild-card" sport that is still TBA. In the event that wrestling were dropped by the NCAA, and thus UW, I'm not sure what would be added to meet the minimum sport requirement. I certainly wouldn't mind baseball, but in all likelihood it would be something more like men's soccer or tennis, which would be lame.

Is lacrosse an olympic sport? It is flourishing in college - both men and women.

I don't know if it is an olympic sport but I do know that there is a pro LAX league that is also growing in popularity.

I would not be opposed to UW having a LAX team as well.

I think if it has an effect on wrestling, it will be a slow decline. Who knows though, I think it's difficult to say Olympics have much to do with the popularity of US sports (see football).

Lacrosse is pretty awesome. 98% of talent is on the East Coast, but Denver is randomly really good, go figure.

Actually I would love to do that.

I am going to do some research over the next few days.
Obviously if I alone got this thing it would take years and years to get people to jump on board to the point where it could happen. But I like your comparison about the guy complaining about the mayor and never going to city hall.

First pitch at BeaverPoke stadium, March 15, 2024. Be there!

If UW added baseball they could add women's softball to offset the scholarships.. does the MW sponsor softball? I know the Big Sky is going to sponsor it in 2015 or something..

What sport do you think most UFC competitors come from? Wrestling is as popular as it has been in the last 30 years in the US. The youth programs have been exploding recently around the country. Collegiate folk style wrestling has NEVER been an olympic sport. And yes Greco and Freestyle will return to the olympics.

The thing is, Wyoming is not broke. If you don't believe me, check (I mean really investigate) the records for the last 5 years or so. Don't listen to what the governor or legislature tell you, because they will fill you with so much BS that you will explode. I believe it was about 3 years ago we had a 3 billion dollar budget surplus. Find out if you can what happened to it. They are really good at hiding it by stashing it in all those (rainy day) fund accounts - of which there are so many they can't even remember where they all are (like that capitol fund account they just remembered they had).

I know this is the wrong forum for this, so I'll save my big rant for another day.
