Yep that is exactly what it was.
They used to give the seniors the best seats (50 yard line) then the juniors then sophomores then freshman which would extend to the endzone. It was priority seating, then it turned into first come first serve.
Totally killing many of the pregame traditions I'm sure. No longer could a 21 year old junior or senior go to their favorite bar until 30 minutes before game time, because tons of other students were getting there early enough to take all the good seats.
They used to have certain seats, everyone was happy, then it changed.
