Oh Really!?!?

Yeah would be great if it happened but this is what Craig Thompson had to say about it :

" Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said he did not have direct contact with Bardo or Wichita State officials. He added that if Wichita State plans to park its basketball program in a new conference, “It ain’t going to be us.” "

One source told CBS Sports that it’s a simple case of economics. The league would be splitting its media rights revenue 12 ways instead of 11 in basketball if it added the Shockers.

One MWC source considered it unlikely that Mountain West's media rightsholders (ESPN, CBS Sports Network) would renegotiate their current contracts to include additional revenue for a 12th basketball school.

But he wasn't the only one:

Other possibilities for the Shockers, including the American Athletic Conference and Conference USA, have been mentioned by various sources.

Sources told CBS Sports that Conference USA would not accept a basketball-only school. Given the upheaval caused by UAB dropping football, it would be unlikely the league would welcome Wichita State with an upstart football program.

I think it is dumb if we aren't considering them even if it is basketball only right now. It would really beef up our conference which has been on a down turn the last 2 years. I think we can turn it around on our own but Wichita would be a great add. I understand the money issue with adding them but think that is short sighted.

I introduced that idea to the Shocker board about 10 years ago, before the MWC lost BYU, TCU, Utah....

They supported a MWC move then and still do, although our basketball league is becoming as big of a shit show with additions like San Jose as the Missouri Valley with Wichita in it.

Hawaii wants to go indendent. We need to help them make that move and then kick Joser to the curb with them.

That allows us to replace them with Utep and Wichita and set up future expansion for when the AAC gets raided and we can pluck teams like Tulsa, Houston, or SMU.

The first step:

MWC East

Utep
UNM
CSU
AFA
Wyo
Wichita

MWC West

USU
Boise
UNLV
Nevada
SDSU
Fresno

I have heard rumors of Hawaii going indy in football (what have you heard Wyokie). If this is true, Wichita St. could be a candidate to fill the void in football (if they add football). They certainly have the credentials in BB. NDSU or one of the Montana schools should also be considered.

1) Why would we want UTEP?? Granted, they are a better option than SJSU, but they don't add anything for us.

2) Why in the world would Tulsa, Houston or SMU even want to come to the MWC? They are in a better conference than we are already and make more money there than they would in the MWC.

UTEP fits geographically and has long standing rivalries with most of the Mountain division. They don't add anything, but they would make sense IF we wanted to expand (which I don't think we should).

If, for whatever reason, Hawaii does leave, Wichita State seems like a shoe-in. NDSU is just too far and would be better off in the MAC if they ever move up. If we have to bring in another school, make it one of the Montana schools. Like MSU, just to piss off Mr. T.

The local state agricultural college is barely on the radar in this state, much less anywhere else.

I haven't heard much lately on Hawaii going Indy. Some of their fans think it'll be better for them than to stay in the MW. But overall....who knows.

Right now my focus Hawaii-wise is getting OUR Paniolo Trophy back and one piece. The original got lost or "stolen" after we beat them in the Islands in 1997.

Yeah, they add. They add a team that consistently performs well at basketball RPI rankings. They make sure the metric that determines how many bids a conference gets, stays high enough for our league to be a multi-bid league instead of a one bid league.

They add a rabid fan base that would invade Vegas for a successful Utep basketball team. They add viewing eyes for the basketball conference at the least, and attendance in football even with a team that sucks at football.

They add a team that has actually dominated a basketball league including BYU, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, UNM, SDSU, and Hawaii(when Hawaii was good). At least Utep has proven that they can have success at basketball. They had prolonged success in the best basketball conference that Wyoming ever played in.

I'd welcome UTEP back to the MWC, we have history with them, and yes would love to see a Wichita St join as well, why not can't hurt, I don't think

Fair enough, I don't disagree with any of the points you made here.

However...I will still say that they don't add anything for us as a conference.

All the stuff you mentioned is fine and dandy, but the ONLY thing that matters when talking about conference realignment/expansion is dollars. If bringing in a team will drop the amount of money that schools get when divided up amongst more members, then that doesn't make sense. If bringing in a school like UTEP will either increase or, at the very least, maintain the $$$ each school gets, than it will be considered. But as far as having a rabid fan base that will go to Vegas or having a history as a decent program, none of that means anything if adding them means less money for all the other schools in the MWC.

I will concede that increasing our conference RPI would help to send more teams to the tourney which would in turn mean more money, but the other reasons you listed are nice but insignificant.

I like to look at this situation as a common sense test. Which situation is a more fluid conference, with balanced strength for all sports going forward. The shockers make sense to me, as does Hawaii going Indy.

Also, which programs match a facilities profile? San Jose has glaringly bad facilities. I'm not the boss, but improvements can always be made. I definetly would not say that I wouldn't consider the shockers if they are actively trying to improve
