O lines on the MWC

Hopefully the link works off of my phone.

The article does not show you Pokes much love. What are your thoughts? Do you have any worries with changing the tempo of your offense? I know for us the faster tempo was good, but we also had many quick strikes for TD's that were over 30 and over 50 yards. That left little time for the D to rest.

I don't know that CSU, Nevada, or Hawaii has a better offensive line than Wyoming. Hawaii returns 4 of 5 starters... That gave up 40 sacks! Is that a good thing?

I don't know that USU is the best. I am confident in that group though.

I personally would put Hawaii last in just about everything :)

Those are some wacky rankings. Fresno State gave up more sacks than even Wyoming did last season. Boise State was 6th nationally in sacks allowed....they are easily #1, let alone #6. SDSU at 9th? This guy must have been on drugs. They've had one of the most consistent lines in the league the last three years. And its hard to take USU and SJSU seriously when they played in a watered down WAC....USU only played two Top 50 defenses last season....they scored 14 and 6 points respectively. That O-Line wasn't too great when they weren't playing UT-San Antonio.

I expect a step back this year for the new WAC arrivals....not a huge one, but naturally a good-sized one. Better schedule + loss of head coach = slight regression. Probably both 7-5 or 8-4 teams at best.....with the potential for disaster (see 2012 Southern Miss). I got to see USU up and close last year....and you'd have to be nuts to not think Andersen wasn't the heart and soul of that program. Continuity will tough for USU.

I've always had a hard time NOT taking USU seriously. 63-19 always flashes in my mind when I doubt them.

.....63-19.

Maybe you should remember this instead. ;)

Anderson sure has strange names for his kids.

Lol 63-19 on Wyo 2 seasons ago does not mean they are good.
Although they WERE good, Wyo's D was HORRIBLE.
Ugh I remember sitting in Romney Stadium and after we scored a TD then recovered that ball in the endzone for another TD, I thought the game was OVER.
But then.........they destroyed us.

Uh, maybe not, but it means they were better than us during a bowl year for us. We have no idea what to expect without Gary Andersen, can't assume they'll suck.

...and our D is still terrible, if not worse.

I'm amazed after last year that some of us still overlook teams on our schedule. Especially 11-2 teams that kicked Toledo's ass in a bowl game so bad they didn't have to worry about if their QB got hurt or not.

Everyone is predicting USU to be second or third in our division, but seriously. What do they have? A new coach and Chuckie Keeton. Which I believe his numbers will drop significantly this year with lack of true receivers. Both of these being big factors I think USU will drop this year. Anywhere around 3-6 wins total. I think we have a really good shot against USU this year.

What? Come on now. Matt Wells has 1 entire year of experience as an OC (last season). What could possibly go wrong with that?

Continuity is extremely hard to achieve. Look across the non-AQ world....only Boise has survived coaching changes and actually gotten better. Even Hawaii flamed out after a few years of June Jones leaving. USU fans are very misguided if they think 2 years of moderate-to-great success means consistency.....enough to stave off a coaching loss of Andersen's caliber.

Funny, the Utah Utes defenses have been nowhere near as dominant since Andersen left....but never mind, I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

Bad until proven otherwise - the theme of the Wyoming O Line. What concerns me - our projected JC transfer starting center isn't even on fricking campus yet.

I'm with McP on this one - just show me the improved O line (and running game and defense). Till then, I won't make any win/loss predictions or rankings compared to the rest of the MWC.

Utah State's O-line is legit and home grown. UW's offensive line is, to be kind, a JC patch job and work in progress. No comparison. The article is right until proven otherwise

USU fan here.

Thanks for the very kind words about our kids. I don't know anything about Wyoming's line, so I'll hold judgement. I think our guys are good. Most of the teams we played last year weren't much (Idaho, Texas State, UT San Antonio), but some were genuinely good (Wisconsin, San Jose St., BYU). Our boys did pretty well. They average 6'5" and 305 lbs. And they aren't just big fat guys taking up space. One of the things that impressed me most last year was their mobility. They'll pancake a D-lineman, then get down field to open a lane in the secondary. They were great on screen plays, executing nice brush blocks, then setting a wall that actually moved fast enough for the halfback to take advantage of it. We return all five starters, including two first team all-WAC players, and a legitimate all-American / Rimington trophy candidate center. I'm feeling pretty good.

Go Pokes Go AGGIES!
