Not being able to compete

Keeping in mind that we are soon to be: WYO, UNM, AF, UNLV, SJSU, HI, UNV, UTEP, and possibly NIU or 1 other.

1) what is your definition of compete? Is it a conference championship or other? Is this group out of our league?

2) when, not if, the split happens and we hopefully end up somewhere between whatever the power conferences become and fcs, do you think NIL and such will even matter as much or will it be closer to fcs?

1) compete means conference to me and I think it's ridiculous to assume we can't run in the future MWC. The MWC will have weakened to the level that the excuses for not competing are nullified.

2) I think TV money dries up as does most of the NIL stuff. Without access to the top level playoff, i think booster level interest in paying athletes will dwindle. I don't think our level will have the TV exposure or prestige to drive big contributions for NIL.

In short, by my definition of compete, the only thing holding WYO back is people.

By "people" we have to look at a few elected by the people who seem antagonistic to UW Athletics (and perhaps sports in general)- Rachel Rodriguez-Williams (R-Cody) and John Bear (R-Gillette). Interesting to me, both of them are from out of state, the former being an alum of Sonoma State and from Northern California, the latter being an alum of CU and from Missouri. Both are expressing their disapproval of flying high end donors on CJC paid- for flights, or in otherwise empty seats on charters or state jets.

I don't know, could be they just never got picked for kickball when they were kids...

If you look at the last 10 contests, or last 10 years for the the teams in that group that we did not play every year, Wyoming is 30-23 against that group. That is a winning percentage of .566

I would call that very nearly the definition of competetive.....

If you want to dominate...you would want that percentage somewhere north of .800. I see no built in advantage at UW vs those schools that would make me think that is something that "should" happen. Now...I will predict that somebody from that group will dominate over the next 5 to 10 years and my guess right now is UNLV or AFA. Wyoming could....but I don't think they will.

The remaining teams in the conference combined for 1 football championship (San Jose St in 2020 COVID season) in the 26 year history of the conference. The remaining teams in the conference combined for 6 of the 24 conference championship game appearances in the 12 conference championship games.

Man, if we can't win a conference championship in the Mountain West 3.0 coming in 2026, then I give up.
