You think Nance is already Top 5?
No
Cutslam I actually think that Nance was misused this season. The Shyatt offense did him no favors IMO. As I stated previously the lack of getting him the ball in a position to be closer to the basket and the inability to get him to the foul line more consistently was a big missed opportunity.
I agree, Nance has to be active to be productive. The get it to Nance on the block and stand around offense doesn't play to Larry's strengths. Its actually his weakness.

I agree. There are things I like about Shyatts offense but the part where we have Nance and Cooke always going to the top of the key and not posting up more around the basket has hurt us IMO. I know he runs a motion offense and you are supposed to have all 5 players being able to score at every position but we don't have 5 guys that can score at all times.

I'm just a message board poster though so I need to stay in my lane.

You guys struggling to get this concept? This theoretical idea that if Wyoming wins the MWC Tourney we make the Big Dance?

Look, I'm not saying we are going to the sweet 16. I'm not saying we are going ANYWHERE. I am asking a fucking theoretical question, that for some reason, you guys can't seem to understand.

So let me ask again, and let me say it very clearly, because apparently it's super hard for you guys to understand.

Does winning the MWC Tourney, and going to the Sweet 16 make Nance a Top 5 Wyo Cowboy?

Okay...under this premise I'd say, yes. So far as players I've personally seen since 2002 and being out here...

A more than astute observation my friend...

No.

So, what would be enough for Nance to get Top 5?
Elite 8? Final 4? National Title game appearance? National Championship?

I think to really make him a Top 5 all-time Wyoming guy he'd have to win the National Championship and then help out with Phase II of the Arena Auditorium renovation.

You crack me up Beav

Only way I could put Larry top 5 is if he started taking over every game the rest of the year and got us to the final 4. An Elite 8 run or a sweet sixteen run would be fun though.

If you are talking top 5 you have to look at other big men who played here. Based on stats and conference wins and NCAA tournament appearances as well as there chances of getting drafted into the NBA. He isn't as good as a few guys have been here. I love Nance and think he is top 12 possibly top 10 . Top 5? No way unless he got us to a final 4.

Is he as good as Eric Leckner? Nope. Bill Garnett? Nope. Reggie Slater? Closer but don't think so. You can also compare him to Theo Ratliff and others. Short of a final four run I don't see how you put him top 5. That is just big men I haven't even talked about any of the guards yet or Dembo who could play both inside and out.

Just my opinion of course. I am sure others think differently. I do love Nance and think he is a warrior though having to play with Crohns. Not many people could do that. I would love to see a tournament run though.

Maybe it is just me but I think sometimes Larry is too passive and feel like he could be a little bit more aggressive and be more of a ball hog.

If you take the supporting cast of any players you just mentioned and give them to Nance this debate isn't even taking place and I think that alone tells you what you need to know about Nance and his place in Cowboy history.

I think these two posts pretty fairly represent the two sides of the coin when you discuss Nance's place in Cowboy history and to an extent I agree with both. I don't feel Nance is in the top 5 and I don't think beav was suggesting such either, I don't really have a great answer where Nance should be. However to me he was a much better player than 0 NCAA tourney appearances with very slim NBA prospects suggest. In terms of actual talent, I feel like he comes pretty darn close to players that we tend to revere as Cowboy fans. Dembo for sure was better. I'm not old enough to really evaluate Garnett's career, but based on what I know I'm sure that Garnett too is better. Let's consider for a second Leckner, Slater, Davis, and we'll throw in Bailey also. I feel like all of them played with a much better supporting cast than Nance ever had and in a system where they were more easily able to play to their fullest ability. How well would those guys do in Nance's place with this coach and these teammates? Because I feel like in the end they were more assertive and more ready to take over games when necessary, they perhaps had better UW careers than Nance , but in terms of actual talent I feel like they are all pretty dang close actually. Ratliff was clearly more physical and hence had an NBA that I doubt Nance will ever have, but I feel like Nance is more well-rounded and I would much rather build a team around him instead. Anyways, thanks for all who responded.

Had to share this. Football coach John Richardson wife just posted a pic on fbook of Larry Nance and NDSU start PG Lawrence Alexander saying that 2 of her most favorite guys ever are going to the dance together. I thought that was pretty cool. (Brent vigens wife replied to it as well. Pretty cool connection between the schools and yes Nance is the best ever to play at wyoming imho
