My thoughts on the UT game...

Mixed feelings after this one. I want to say the game was closer because we have improved, but I think Texas is also not nearly as good as they were last year. Despite their #5 ranking, if there is a year to beat UT in Austin, this is it, who knows how good they will be in 2 years when we return.

1. Obviously tackling.... Right after we scored to take the lead, T. Gibson had a free shot on a corner blitz that would have forced Texas into a punt, giving us the ball with momentum before the break... alas the sack is missed, Gilbert completes the pass along the sideline and next play is a touchdown. Football is a long game, but I really believe sometimes games get decided on the turn of of 1-2 plays sometimes. Seriously though, How many tackles can we miss?

2. The fake FG was HORRIBLE. At that point in the game, if you're going to go for it, just line up and make your best play, but don't have your kicker take the ball and try to gain 3 yards against a top 5 defense. The most obvious fake FG in the history of the game of football, considering we had already lined up to go for it when Texas called a timeout to catch their breaths.

3. I don't think the D-Line was as manhandled as we had feared coming into this game, but so many missed tackles at the second level its tough to say. I just wish these guys could get to the QB 1 second sooner and actually wrap him up and take him down when they do.

4. The O-Line...... needs to protect better, ACS needs to sometimes get rid of the ball better. He can't always count on his ability to get away against teams like Texas. He also needs to work on his zone reads.

5. I do think the skill positions have been upgraded.

6. I hope this result is a positive one, but I can't tell right now.

1. Agreed. Tackling needs to be addressed. Big time. I think they are trying for bigger hits over just stopping them.
2. I agree. At the very least, they could have thrown instead of ran. But I wish that they had just come out in the 5 WR set.
3. They did look better. But they still need some polish, and with going up against some of the best teams in the country, I think they will be alright long term.
4. For the most part, when Texas just rushed 4, they did alright. However, when blitzed, it becomes VERY hard for 5 O-linemen to pick up every block.
5. Definitly. Passing game is MUCH better. Just need to figure out how to run the ball. All we seem to be able to get are draws.
6. There is improvement, just not as much as one could have hoped for. Especially along the O-line.

I didn't dig a couple of things:

1. The Texas TD with 54 seconds left...with the Texas 1's still in, etc.
2. The missed opportunities with our FG team (at least 6 points off the scoreboard).

I guess it is what it is...
