MW Media Days

Totally off topic, but whoever is running the social media graphics department needs to be sacked. This washed-out look that they're going with this year is flat out ugly.

6th. I like it. Always good to be the underdog in preseason polls. Hope the team is up to the challenge...if so, I see no worse than T-3rd.

Simply awful, but better than the "humping in the trees" marketing pictures of years past, lol.

I'd say we're probably closer to 4th. CSU being picked above us is laughable. Utah St. was closer to us in voting than we were to CSU.

This is about where I figured we would be picked, although I'm mildly surprised CSU was picked ahead of us.

In my eyes, 6th place should really be the absolute floor for this team. If we finish any lower than that, it will be a failure of a season.

The sheep have that good receiver and their qb returning. I'm not surprised they were picked in front of us. I'd be a lot more surprised if they actually finished ahead of us. Frankly, I think even 6th would be a failure based on all the talent we have returning. But, let's see how the Oline and the new QB perform.

PBJ defenders probably disagree, but I'm with you. 6th isn't exactly screaming consistency of success.

POKES (better be) and suds too low, imo.
I think usu and csu are too high.

If the consistency that Coach Monte Cristo brings is an extension of Coach Bohl's success...then finishing 6th in conference is almost exactly the right number.

When ranked by conference wins...here is what the "good" Bohl years looked like when you consider the entire MWC (with some judgement calls to account for the divisions). This results in an average finish of 5.75th place. This is just finish order considering conference wins...I know that we got beat in the title game in 2016.
  • 2023 6th, no divisions
  • 2022 6th, Head to head loss to SJSU drops us behind them and SDSU.
  • 2021 9th, UNLV also had two conference wins...didn't play them.
  • 2020 8th, Covid year...IMO Bohl's low point.
  • 2019 6th, Head to head win against Nevada keeps us out of 7th.
  • 2018 6th, SDSU also had 4 wins...didn't play them...we'll give the pokes 6th.
  • 2017 5th
  • 2016 1st, Josh Allen, tie-breaking win over SDSU...fun season
So...if you are just trying to continue the results Bohl achieved, then Coach Grilled Cheese getting to 6th place fits the bill.

Remember...once Bohl got past those first two years...his winning percentage was .532 in conference games. That winning rate gets you comfortably to 6th place or so in the MWC. That may be what Bohl accomplished but I'm not satisfied with merely a continuation of that. Coach Bánh Mì should bring a step forward. Outside of a championship or a 1 win conference campaign next year...I don't think anybody will be able to tell for sure if that has happened.

We were 5th in 2023.

Also, The MW says we were 3rd in the Mtn in 2022 and ESPN says we were 2nd. We beat AF and only lost 1 divisional game to Boise with non div to SJSU and Fresno. The MW looks like they list divisions by divisional record and then overall. Using how the MW lists teams by division, we would be 4th. However, We have a better divisional record and also beat AF so I think ESPN is correct and we're 2nd in the Mtn division. Aztecs are listed ahead of Spartans with both 5-3 and SJSU would have tie over us, so we'd be 5th in that scenario.

Whoops...messed that 2023 one up.

In 2022 5 teams went 5-3 in conference. With the division shenanigans...it's a tie-breaker nightmare...I just used the MW standings listed online that had Wyo placed third...then looked at if we played any of the teams in the other division (in this case SJSU) and put them and the teams ahead of them ahead of us.

If you move '22 and '23 to 5th place finishes, you end up with an average finish of 5.63th place.... I probably made errors in other years but you still end up barely better than 6th place on average. Using Bohl's success as the yardstick of "continued success" get's you to 6th place. I hope we do better than that.

We'll see what PBJ does this year. Hopefully he excels. Regardless of semantics, I would hope that 6th place would be disappointing though i fully expect the excuse machine to fire up should we end up there or lower.

If we assume that the strongest predictor of college football success is the size of the budget, then there is a pretty good argument to be made that we are over-performing relative to our budget.

For FBS schools, the athletic department budgets increased an average of 50% from 2018 to 2023. At Wyoming, the athletic budget increased by 12% during that same time.

SDSU and UNLV will be interesting schools to watch because their athletic budgets have increased the most (76% at SDSU and 34% at UNLV) over the past 5 years. Seems to be working for them so far...we will see if they can sustain the success and the budget increases that success will require.

Performance is likely to be relatively to correlative to not just athletic budget but NIL payments to players.

As of now - We are over performing NIL as well. SDSU, Boise and UNLV NIL dwarfs ours. It appears we are closer to the bottom in NIL in the MWC.

Phil Knight announced that Oregon has no limit in NIL funding because he would like to buy a championship.

I think there is some confusion about what is meant by being disappointed. If the metric is just as simple as "am I happy or unhappy with the program"...then I think a lot of people's answer during Bohl's tenure would be yes...if you just have to choose between those two options. That is different than being satisfied though. "Happy with the program" seems to mean winning home games, no scandals, and beating CSU a lot. Most fans seem "happy" with those outcomes while at the same time being disappointed that the top of the conference is always out of reach.

In general, I think it's really hard to do what Bohl did ... meaning that to only barely be .500 in conference for the last 8 years while still being successful at those metrics that keep fans happy is no small feat. IMO, if coach Turkey Club's program can't at least maintain the level of success that Bohl's program had, it only makes my argument stronger that winning (at something near the level of BSU) at the University of Wyoming is constrained by factors outside of the control of the man running the football program. the only way to disprove this is if coach BLT or some future coach actually pulls off a run of successful years vying for and winning conference titles. The pace at which Wyoming goes through coaches means that by 2050 we might have 4 to 6 more coaches that we have gone through.....I wish they would give guys two years (maybe 3) to win or appear in a title game. With that sort of policy, we at least get the most bites at the apple. You could make some version of that for the Athletic Director as well....
