Mountain West in Transition [Schmoldt]

Thompson is right. Only 6% of the US population lives in the Mountain Time Zone. Advertisers, and hence TV, don't give a rodent's backside about the people who live here. The spending power of MST residents don't count for crap to them.

To keep my rant to a minimum...in summation...

I have a real problem with his type of leadership (or lack of). Ergo, 6% of the US population lives in the Mountain time zone, so that must mean the MWC has no fanbase outside of the mountain time zone. Huh?

I am obviously not a collegiate athletic conference commissioner, but this is quite a way to dummy down (and TomBurmanize) what you are doing. God forbid that the Hair should be forward thinking enough to grow the MWC, instead of always being lucky and reactive, and playing catch up. If I were in his spot, I would have approached it agressively, on the offense. None of this whoa's us horseshit.

Well, considering that probably only 3 or 4% of that 6% are even fans of MWC teams and outside of the mountain timezone you maybe have another 2 or 3%, then yeah, i'd say it makes sense.

I think you're overestimating a little the power Thompson has. He serves the President's. He has no real decision power. Maybe he can bring topics up and lead discussions, but he doesn't have any real power.

Outside of the current TV deal, where we are obviously WAY underpaid (and who knew 6 years how big media contracts were going to get), I think Thompson has done a fairly good job of helping steer the MW through very difficult times and a situation with BYU, which if handled incorrectly could have led to the demise of the MW.

Unfortunately the MW is always going to be more reactive than proactive due to our respective place on the totem pole in collegiate athletics.
