Lol...this is getting sweet for Wyoming....
CSU lost everyone. NM lost a couple key pieces, they should still be good though. SDSU lost their star.
UNLV is losing people..
If Nance makes another big step forward next season...why can't he be a MWC POY canidate?
Actually I think in some respects the league will be even tougher next year. A quick early rundown:
1. UNM - Losing Snell and Alford (Steve that is) hurts for sure, but they still return 4 starters from a two time defending regular season conference champ and they have some nice talent coming in (Lindsey and Neal, among others). Keeping Craig Neal was a smart move IMO and that continuity should allow them to stay at the top of the league. They may not have as much raw talent as UNLV, but the combination of talent, experience, and coaching is tough to beat.
2. BSU - Maybe crazy to put them this high, but they basically bring back everyone from a young team that earned an at-large bid and finished tied with SDSU during the regular season. We will never recruit like UNLV or SDSU, but what Leon Rice is doing at BSU is a model we can follow.
3. UNLV - They just keep stockpiling talent. I expect them to once again earn an at-large bid and lose in the first round of the NCAA tourney. Smith, Brich, Reinhardt, Jones, etc. are going to be tough to deal with.
4. SDSU - Of the top teams, they suffer the biggest losses IMO with Tapley and Franklin, but they have an incredible core of about 7-8 players and that is all you really need. Spencer and Shepherd were scary good as freshman and O'Brien and Thames are solid. Add in Allen and Shrigley and they will be very tough. I think they will earn the 4th and final tourney bid from the MWC next year.
5. USU - First year in the league, which is always tough, but they will be a veteran, well coached group with a great homecourt advantage. Like the Pokes, they were derailed with injuries this past year, but their starting lineup will have three very good seniors (Medlin, Butterfield, and Shaw) and some other solid pieces. I think they are a NIT team.
6. Fresno - Came on last year and have some very nice players coming into the program next year. Guerrero will change their backcourt immediately (it's telling that Olekiebe went from being their top scorer last year, to a marginal contributor this year to leaving the program because there was likely no playing time available). Not convinced Terry is the coach to get full potential out of this group, but he has assembled the pieces. NIT/CBI
7. Wyoming - Hankerson and Nance will form a great combo for the next two years. Not enough help though. Probably a CBI team.
8. CSU - They lose the most of anyone in the league. They should still be solid around the perimeter with Carr, Smith, Bejarano (an all conference type talent), Hurst, Cohn, Octeus, etc. I put them here because I just don't know what they are going to do in the front court. Santo didn't impress me and in terms of Holt, I am never high on guys that can't average more than 3 ppg in JC, even on a good JC team.
9. Nevada - Burton is coming back, but a lot of attrition and it sort of feels like Carter's days are numbered.
10. AFA - Probably underrate them.
11. SJSU - Welcome to the MWC.
