Mike Rice

LOL! Did you see the video from OTL? So bad it made me laugh.

I was more disturbed by the language and phrases he used then the actions depicted in the video. Not to condone what he did, but throwing basketballs at his players (minus the time he targeted a head) to me is not all that terrible. I guarantee there are many D-1 coaches around the country that get physical and occcasionally cross the line within the confines of practice. Again, not condoning any of these actions, but it happens a lot more than we hear about.

Profanity is the norm in NCAA. I have been to many clinics and observed countless practice sessions and every coach (except one) employs profanity as a key component of their demeanor. I find Mike Rice's behavior and language appalling to say the least. You can have a fire in your belly and a desire to win without the profanity and belittling of your athletes. Unfortunately it has become an accepted part of the package. The one exception to this was Dean Smith and although I never had the privilege of listening to him Coach Wooden was the complete opposite of what today's coaches personify. I believe that a coach must value his or her athletes and and treat them like a human being and they will run through walls for you. It is all about building a relationship with your athletes and fostering a competitive spirit among your team. Rice is a classic example of a coach who went unchecked way too long! Imagine if your son was one of those kids in his practices......Wow.

You're right Jarhead--it seems to be more and more irregular to find coaches who treat their kids with respect, even in the d2-NAIA levels, or even juco for that matter. It's sad when you find a coach like the guy at EWC in Torrington that wins recruiting battles in large part because he doesn't cuss out his kids or dress them down in public--good for that program, bad that something that simple isn't the norm. It's one of the reasons I hope shyatt has a patient administration that will let him build the right way.

Knowing what we know about Luke Martinez, I wonder what Rice's jaw would have looked like if he shoved Luke.

It would be fine because the only way Martinez is tough is if you are passed out on the sidewalk drunk! LOL
