McManamen goes from Torrington star to MW's hottest shooter

Remember how JMac ins't even supposed to be starting on a MW team? Weird.
I remember him as a freshman and I never thought he'd be a legitimate MWC player. I'm amazed at how far he's come. Jason is awesome

i didn't see him breaking out this way, no offense, but I'm truly happy for him, being a Wyo guy myself, keep it up Jason

People were calling for Shyatt to pull Grabaus scholly after his freshman year. (LOL)

People were worried about Nance replacing Washington. (LOLOL)

People didn't think McManamen could seriously contribute.....

When will we realize Shyatt knows just a little bit more about developing basketball players than us?
We give him the credit AFTER it's done, but call him out and question him BEFORE it's done.

Next time you want to say "This kid sucks, why is he playing so much?" just remember who his coach is.

Shyatt develops players very well, but Shyatt's done a crappy job of getting the right players the right amount of minutes this year. This year's record does not have to be this bad.

He is very good at developing players, no doubt. I don't think anyone here has really questioned his ability to develop players. I worry though sometimes about his ability to recruit talent. I don't know if we can consistently be a top level team relying mostly on developing overlooked high school players. I'm happy for Jason and think he is reaching his ceiling, indicative of good player development. But if Jason is our 2nd best player, which he is right now and will be top returning player next year, I worry about the overall rosters lack of talent. That has been my point all along.

Are you forgetting we had a player drafted in the first round last year and 3 others from that class are playing professional BB. There is also another player that will probably get drafted this year. I would say he is doing pretty good - better than we have had for a long time.

I don't think you are making the same point as me. Schroyer's team were arguably much more talented, at least in his first few years, but we all know what a clown he was in terms of a coach.

The point I am making is the roster top to bottom is somewhat lacking on overall talent. Yes we have had a good top one or two guys every year, but after that we haven't had much talent depth, and we continue to struggle with it. This is why we continually find ourselves in a position where if one thing happens to our top guy (as it has the past few years, thankfully not this year with Josh) the wheels of our whole team fall off.

This is exactly what I am talking about. "I worry about the overall rosters lack of talent".

Dude seriously? JMac has the BEST 3point % in the MWC.

And he is averaging more points right now than Josh Adams did last season.
Did you worry about the rosters lack of talent last season when Josh wasn't scoring as much as JMac is now?

Not only that but Aka Gorski is shooting the 6th best 3 point FG % in the MWC. As a sophomore.

And Justin James? He is shooting 19th best, but not even 2% worse than Josh Adams. JJ is a freshman, and is shooting 35.3% from 3. Josh is shooting 37.1% but his last 3 seasons, 32.4% as a JR, 31.3% as a SO, and a whopping 22.6% as a freshman.

We have Naughton and Barnes who have both showed glimpses of being contributors.

Plus, we have Herndon, who although is not a star, is adding a solid 7 and 4 per game. No reason he shouldn't improve on that next season.

Our team is not loaded with elite talent, but it is loaded with competitors, and solid talent, along with an elite coach, and kids willing to be coached.

So all in all, we return 3 of the top 19 3 point shooters in the MWC next season, and will no longer be the 6th youngest team in the country.

At the end of the day, we are a 5-7 team that has lost to SJSU and AFA. You are what your record says you are. We have a couple of guys with a good FG%? Cool story I guess. That stat doesn't tell me a whole lot. 3Point % tells you a bit more about someone, but that's not exactly something that puts all my concerns to rest. Are you anticipating us to be a top 3 MW team next year based off of your observations that you laid out for me?

To answer you question, yes I worried about the roster last year as well. We were most nights a 7 man team last year that promptly tanked when we lost our best player and a rotation guy for a few games. We do have competitors and a great coach, but there are plenty of teams with even better talent and great coaching as well.

Hopefully the team can finish the season off solid and make a run in the tournament. Always a possibility with Josh Adams.

Those better teams / more talented teams we keep hear about are New Mexico,- just beat them at home for the first time, San Diego, we have beat them like 3 times in the last year at home? Shyatt will have this team by next year playing lights out.. not to mention, they are really start to jell right now with 6 games left in the season..

Shyatt has gotten better recruits each year he has been here and considering how successful the first class was that is a great thing. Justin James is a legit recruit so is Naughton. Haven't seen Conway but he should be the next great PG in the system. Is he recruiting at the levels of some other teams in the conference yet? No but as long as he developes the players and continues to recruit better each year we will be fine. The guys we are in on for 2017 are at another level too.

Shyatt had a good initial class, but I'd call the recruiting lackluster (with the exception of Adams) until this last one. James, Naughton, Momeka and Conway will take this program places.

Kind of like you're constantly doing with Bohl?

Pot, meet kettle.

By the way, I agree with you. But I also think Bohl should be given time to implement and develop his system, as Shyatt has been. Seems to be working out for the basketball program.

The difference is, not a single Bohl recruit at Wyoming has gone to the pros, and not a single team of Bohl recruits has won the MW conference championship. Sure, Bohl was able to be successful and accomplish those things in Fargo. That shouldn't be ignored, but it also shouldn't be a guarantee that things will work here. I think it's fair to question Bohl until it is proven in Laramie, but at the same time I can see how others are expecting great things in the near future given his history.
