Maybe this is why Sternberg shit canned a bunch of people...

They were resistant to change. It seems like Robert got rid of some people that needed to be axed. Even the new president says so.

Had Sternberg stayed, he would've fired Burman and gotten UW athletics back on track.

It seems like a lot of the administrators that were there before didn't agree with the energy industry.

They need to realize, the energy industry funds the University, employs the majority of people in the state, and has been more than generous to the University of Wyoming. Who cares if you don't like coal or support it, let the people that are paying the bills at UW develop that resource and continue investing in the University. National policy will kill coal, they didn't even need to worry about that.

If the energy business wants UW to help advance their cause and are willing to pay for it, then we need to enhance those relationships and deepen their commitment to UW. Who fucking cares if you can't display some dumb ass art display on campus?

While I agree with this point, some among the professorial types likely viewed themselves as hypocritical by taking coal money without fighting against coal's development and use. Of course, there are those in the academy who view any type of private sector profit-making as morally corrupt.

I have heard other explanations for what happened regarding the President and I have to say that the stories, if true, both demanded his replacement and had nothing to do with the policies that he was trying to implement or the public comments that he made. I also imagine, but do not know, that the issues at the root of the stories would not have been easily discoverable in a headhunting-type hiring process where we were trying to poach a competitor's executive without tipping off the competitor.

Sternberg was clearly pursuing an agenda that was given to him by those who hired him.

And yet those same people let him go after 4 months....

Apparently Sternberg was so ham-handed and inelegant that they had no choice.

You mean, apparently sternberg didn't care too much about the ole boys club so they fired him?

No. He was trying to implement what the governor and legislature wanted, as noted by McGinity, but his arrogance, clumsiness and disregard for people's sensitivities made him a liability. That's what I mean.

Yup. Someone with power doesn't have to abuse it to get results. There's a certain finesse for these types of things, Sternberg didn't have it.

(Which I still don't understand since he is a psychology genius.)

So change the name to Wyoming School of mines, shut down 75% of the campus, and let all those WYo kids who enjoy music and art go to school elsewhere

I don't think anyone is suggesting that we can't have a good humanities program at Wyoming. The point is UW officials were apparently blowing off or ignoring the people who hold the purse strings. This is not a smart maneuver. You have to make those people in Cheyenne happy in order to derive benefit for all the university. Otherwise, you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I think the facts are that the university was open to input but that some state folks wanted to dictate. There is a difference. So far, it looks like the State is getting its way. As far as Sternberg is concerned, I liked his vision and particularly his vision for our sport teams. But without going into all of the events, as anyone close to the situation knows, the guy was just utterly narcissitic, bizzare, and just plain mistreated people (administrators and staff). The bottom line is the BOT mishandled the process of his hiring. A few phone calls to previous employers would have avoided that disaster. Let's move on.

Amen. My kids are surely not there because of energy and mining. They are/were there because of a solid program in the Biological sciences.
