Larry Shyatt... Larry Shyatt you're our only hope

Look, I've been watching this Sternberg situation from afar and I don't really feel like I know enough to pass judgment on it, but I do know that when our university has to find a new president after the old one was on the job for four months, that is not a good situation at all. I think I also know enough to believe that morale on campus amongst students and faculty is at an all time low, which has me profoundly bummed.

Our football season went from "promising" to "dumpster fire" faster than you can say "half a hundred." We're in a very difficult situation with a coach that is clearly underperforming and has a fairly substantial buyout and a program that is nudging into "career dead end" territory. I like the good breathless rumor mongering situation and blind optimism that comes along with a coaching search as much as the next guy but the cycle of "get pumped for the new guy and then realize he sucks five years later" is growing quite old.

Our 2012-13 basketball season even did us no favors by starting with a very promising non-conference season and then totally going off the rails after our most essential player made a few very poor choices.

We have some strong programs in non-revenue sports (good stuff, wrestling) but let's face facts, they won't move the needle enough to get people feeling good about the university again.

But we do know that the school and the state will absolutely go nuts over a team that's even "above average." A successful basketball season where we contend for a conference championship and at least consideration for an NCAA tournament berth... we really need that right now. And I think we can have it. And I think Shyatt knows all of this and while he won't put the weight of the whole school on his kids, it's percolating in everyone's mind that UW needs a shot of good juju in the worst way. And hoops also needs to get the taste of last season's Jekyll/Hyde season out of everyone's mouth

The team has weaknesses (frontcourt depth, continued questions over perimeter athleticism) but if the parts we do have gel we'll be right there in the top third of the conference in March. More than anything I want to watch a team that just gives a shit about each other and the name on the front of the jersey. So Larry, I say to you: you're our only hope. Give us something to believe in, it's all we ask.

Well, his first 2 years he had his starters, and maybe 1-2 guys that could actually contribute off the bench (since like 4-5 guys transferred after he who shall not be named left), and somehow managed 20 wins both years. This year, we actually seem to have about 8-9 guys that can contribute on a solid basis, giving us far more depth than we've had.
