Laramie Bommerang

Is it just me or does the Bommerang seem to be trying to push for UW to drop down to the FCS level? They have published a couple of articles about dropping down and posted a poll about it online. They published a couple of articles about dropping down and posted a poll about it online.

well I look forward to seeing a large amount of editorial reviews......

Like it or not, they make some good points.
Often times a lot of the people pushing for that are college kids who don't know anything about athletics and don't see how Wyo sports impact them at all.
Most arguments made for dropping say things like "It costs so much money" or "We aren't even good". Rarely does anyone actually bring stats and facts into it like this article did.

Why was it written so well? It was Gags, who actually knows wtf is going on.

I read this article this morning. I immediately thought - what is it with a small percentage of Wyomingites wanting to drop a level?

I know we haven't been very competitive lately. I also know that we are paying our bills and not going into debt trying to fund an athletics department.

There are alot of problems with our athletics department, as there are with many other institutions out there. Heck, I bet a good chunk of Texas' problems get overlooked due to their cash flow.

Regardless, we have been making changes, all seem to be for the better, and we should find the formula to be sucessful again someday.

I hope Burman is building a rainy day fund for when that happens. Once we find a success model, we need to be able to keep our coaches and make it work.

The good news: UW and state officials were poised for a response- Ian posted it in a thread on GoWyoGo reference the same. Governor Mead, UW President McGinity, AD Burman, et al are adamantly opposed to dropping down and also cite a recent WTE poll citing 72% of those that responded are opposed as well.

I think a better question is why do we have such a small percentage that have any interest in Wyo athletics in the first place?

It may be only a small percentage that want Wyo to drop to FCS, but there aren't much more that want us to stay.
Hypothetical... with some made up numbers to help get my point across...
2% want us to drop
3% want us to stay at D1
95% don't give a crap.

W00t! I was quoted.

I was also wondering what the Brammer guy is talking about in his comment? He's pointing out that there'll be a long-term revenue loss for Wyoming and local businesses if the team drops down to FCS, but that it somehow still makes sense?

Yeah, the state is putting in money into the football program, but it still runs at a surplus, and all the extra people who are in Laramie means increased sales for local businesses and extra collected sales tax for the city itself. I don't understand at all how this makes sense... it'd be one thing if the program was in the red by several million dollars per season, but it's not!

That guy's a pseudointellectual Boomerang serial commenter with an inflated sense of his own ideas' importance.

also....notice how the @wyosports tweet says "Div II" not "FCS"

Personally, I think it is a moot point anyway. We are already in transition into another semi-FBS type league. I originally thought an all out split was going to happen, but I'm not so sure--at least for a very long time.

Gags is right about our chances of getting into playoff and likely even one of the other big bowls (formerly BCS bowls).

I believe it will be an unofficial split but be an effective split nonetheless. Really, it has already happened. The transition away from the BCS hurt us more than it helped.

I just read the Gagliardi article. I don't mind the mention of Idaho and Montana, but to me it paints a wrong picture.

In a case like Idaho, they moved up because Boise State did, plain and simple. There's nothing wrong with that, either. I see it as a similar situation to what took place in the Dakotas, even though its at a different level. NDSU moved up from Division II to FCS, so SDSU felt they had to move up as well. UND moved up, so USD followed.

They wanted to stay with their rivals, so that's why they made the move. Same with Montana.

In Wyoming's situation, moving down does nothing. All the Pokes rivals are at the FBS level. What would be gained from a move down? Travelling expenses might actually expand, depending on what FCS conference they'd join. So what's the incentive?

I agree. As long as the AD is self supportive (at minimum) why change?

It doesn't make any sense. I'm sick of losing, too, but dropping a division is nonsense.

I would argue dropping would have an overall negative impact on donations and fan interest.......and just hate even hearing this mentioned. Other than Montana schools.....I really don't see any rivalries being created either. :twocents:

We'd still schedule CSU... and rather than being about 50/50 in our match-ups with them, we'd win maybe 1 IN 50. That'd sit great with proud Poke fans.

Been busy this week....finally got to reading this article. Hard to not feel like this piece is a bit trollish. There is optimism surrounding the program with the hiring of Bohl, misplaced or not....people are excited. NOBODY is talking about moving down to the FCS level, something that like MrTitleist has pointed out, has NEVER happened before. No FBS school has ever voluntarily gone down to the FCS level. The article is borderline trolling, and the responses within that article by public officials pretty much confirms that.

Scott Nulph came out with a piece the very next day saying moving down was never gonna happen.

The Laramie paper is a piece of shit. Has been for the last 10 - 15 years. And gets worse all the time.
