Kevin’s Commentary: Opening Day Quarterbacks

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Cameron Coffman’s road to Laramie has been a little different than most Cowboy quarterbacks whose very first start in the Brown and Gold came on the opening day of the season.

His story has been well-documented. A Missouri native from an impressive football-playing family, Coffman began his career at a junior college, then signed, and played in 14 games at Indiana University. He had a sensational sophomore season for the Hoosiers finishing in the Top Five in six Big Ten Conference passing statistics.

But playing time, and thus statistical production, dropped appreciably during Coffman’s junior year, and he decided to play elsewhere. Wyoming is the beneficiary. After sitting out the 2014 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, he won the quarterbacking job for the Cowboys with an outstanding spring, and carried that level of play through this Fall Camp.

Which brings him to Saturday, his first Wyoming start as a Cowboy against North Dakota in the 2 p.m. season and War Memorial Stadium opener.

I think Cam Coffman will be the key to this season. We don't need him to be Brett Favre out there. Just move the chains, don't get sacked, and don't turn the ball over. Three areas the Pokes were dreadful at in 2015. We may be surprised at how big of a difference improving in just those three areas can make for this team.

This year is a good year to have coffman being a game managment qb. Run the ball hit the open recievers and move the chains. During the spring game all I heard was how Allen was the gunslinger. Give him two years with these young recievers watch out 2017. Junior qb that's got lots of practice woth his core recievers. A senior rb that will be a beast a junior rb that should be more than capable. Our offense should be the best we have had in years in 2017. I'm excitied to watch our backs pound defenses this year and for our offense to improve in years to come.
