Ok, so all this negativity around my beloved football team...the one and only football team that I care about in this world, has really gotten me down. So, I thought I would put some of my thoughts on here for J-Rod and everyone else to thrash... :D

I honestly feel like we are a better team than last year. It has been pointed out on her plenty of times, that we were a few less fumble recoveries and interceptions away from being a 3 or 4 win team last year. We got lucky and we got some wins. This year, we are actually a better team imo than last year. I have seen some things this year (I admit, being from Iowa I haven't seen them as much as I would like) that suggest to me that we are a better team.

1. We were "in the game" against a Texas team that has proven to be very good.
2. We should have beaten a VERY VERY good Toledo team.
3. While our defense is still AWFUL, the past couple weeks have shown me that the new DC might be getting some things figured out.
5. We all know there are a few other games on the schedule we should have won.
4. Clearly our speed/talent on the offensive side is getting better.

Some things I hope to see for next year:
1. I hope we sign a bunch of big, athletic linemen that can get a push up front. Especially on the offensive side of the ball.
2. We need a couple more Blair Burns type guys that can cover better man to man. A huge problem for our defense right now.
3. More blitzing on defense!

I really am optimistic for next year...oh and I am hoping for one more thing....a media outlet that doesn't tell me we are going to win a conference championship.

I agree with everything you said 100%. And I also think getting better players in the secondary that can cover man on man will take care of our blitz issues. If we had more people that could cover one on one Tormey wouldn't have to shy away from the blitz being afraid to be burned, he loves to blitz if you look at his defenses of the past he bitzed frequently and played a zone blitz scheme. I think we are just missing a secondary to cover well enough for him to open up his whole package.

I do expect the team to be better next season, but that's a tough argument to make (2012 > 2011)....

In 2011, Wyoming put pressure on a Top 10 caliber Boise State team that stretched away in the 2nd half for a blowout.

In 2012, Wyoming got clown stomped at home by a BSU team that is drastically worse than last years thanks to a gawd awful QB in Joe Southwick. BSU is fielding its worst QB this millennium, yet won more convincingly than last season....against a team that featured Kellen Moore.

There are arguments to be made that last years team was lucky, or that this years team is unlucky. But to say that this years team is BETTER than last years? Josh Biezuns and Gabe Knapton would laugh their asses off at that.

I agree, we haven't had the breaks we had last year.....in fact we've had many more bad breaks. Luckily, we will return most of our skilled position players. We redshirted 18 players this year including some big DL, some big/tall receivers, and a couple JC OL. Need to pick it up on D. If that mean another Def Coordinator, then so be it. We need to get back to nasty.

Looking forward to running the table and getting things back on track next year.

Go Pokes!

Oh J-Rod, I knew you would comment...actually I agree with you a little bit...but not entirely. I think the difference between the BSU game this year and the BSU game last year was the result of exactly what I am talking about. We won games last year going into the BSU game. We had confidence going into the game last year. Last year, our coach hadn't cussed out a head coach of an opposing team, and subsequently having the video go viral on youtube, and causing what I can only imagine as major drama in the locker room. I think if we play the way we played against Texas this year against BSU the game would have been a lot closer. (btw...on a completely different and sad note...i miss biezuns and knapton so much. i love those guys) But I do see your point. from the outside looking in, my argument doesn't hold a lot of water if you just look at the score of games. but that was kinda why i wrote the post. to try and point out how i feel about this team vs. last years team without looking at the scores of the games. (which i realize is all that really matters.) But i think we are going to be okay and I think we will see a more 2011 team next year than a 2010/2012.

Our offense is way better than it was last year. The running game isn't quite where it was though.

Defensively we are hurting pretty bad. Tormey will have to fix this in the off season as I don't think much is going to happen defensively the rest of the year.

The old saying goes 'offense wins games, defense wins championships.' This is why I believe Boise and TCU have been historically tough - they put the extra effort in on defense.

IMHO our priorities:

1.) Secondary coverage - expecially the ability to play man coverage and not get burned.
2.) Both lines - more protection for the quarterback, less protection for theirs.
3.) Improvements in the running back corps.

Does anyone know if the Tormey's reluctance to blitz is his philosophy of defense or is it just because of the injuries we have sustained and resulting lack of personnel that he feels he can't risk blitzing right now?

Just my Monday-morning-QB-ing observation-

When you don't have a solid secondary that allows for one-on-one coverages and such when needed, becomes kind of hard.

Sending 7 guys and leaving our corners and safeties 1-on-1 sounds like a recipe for some long TDs.

It is not his philosophy for sure. He loves blitzing and that is a major part of his philosophy. He has a philosophy of a zone blitzing scheme, so the main reason for the lack of blitzing this season is the unability of our secondary to cover people one on one and also the injuries sustained all over on defense. His philosophy is to blitz the circumstances have made it go otherwise.

djm, I assumed that was the case. However, in light how how badly the secondary is getting picked apart, seems like we might as well blitz.

I think our secondary is mediocre, but not terrible. They get picked apart, but I think some blitzes is what rattles a QB a little. I would love to see more.

In high school our coach had a "Coaches Special" blitz he called it. Where all 11. Yes, all 11 people would blitz. If he thought in the slightest that it would be a pass he wouldnt do it. However, many times, that was the first play of the game we would do. Blitz the shi outta people. It was a riot and the offense was always like What the H just happened. Granted, I am not dumb enough to think that would work in the college game...just sharing that

Our offense seems better than last year, but we've scored less at this point of the season. I do agree with your three priorities.

We've been without the most imprtant player for how many quarters? How do we compare with last year taking that into account?
