His son says he is in the hospital and his condition is "minute by minute".

The coach is 84, and not in a good spot.
 
I don't want the guy to die by any means, but as a coach, I have zero respect for Jerry Tarkanian. It may not be a appropriate time for that statement, but whatever.

Agree. He was a win-at-ALL-cost type coach! Fit the Vegas mold perfectly!!!!

Completely disagree with you both. Completely. You know not of what you speak - I promise.

Tark was a helluva coach, mentor, person, second father, friend, husband, etc. To say otherwise is simply ignorant.

Having met both Tark and his wife, Lois, personally, I can say they are tremendous individuals and I hope these reports are untrue and Tark is in good health. I can't speak about $100 bills, but I can say he's a helluva nice guy.
 
I have heard first hand from a player that played for him that he gave players hundreds of dollars in cash every time they asked for it.

Maybe, maybe not, but we do know the NCAA paid the Shark millions for their perfidy.

And, while I suppose it doesn't end any sort of general ethical discussion, in the golden ages of college sports, players got paid like crazy and all sorts of cheating went on everywhere. Still does, though it's marginally harder to keep quiet.

There's a reason for the old joke:

"The NCAA is so goddamn mad at Kentucky that they put Cincinnati on probation again."
 
To hear something, or to overhear somebody say something, or to assume something because of rumor or hearsay - about anyone or any situation is the gospel and truth (and in this thread that anyone happens to be Tark) is one of the great faults of the human race.

The NCAA picked on Tark, because he didn't take any of their shit and wouldn't back down. Tark stood up for kids that needed a second chance in life, and the NCAA hated that. They wanted the white collar trust fund teams to rule the NCAA, and UNLV was far from that.

He passed away today and no matter how you feel about him he was a Basketball legend. Tark battled an NCAA suspension for 11 years all the way to the supreme court that is why the NCAA labeled and attacked him. Not only id he battle that suspension but he won.
 
Rest in Peace finally Tark, loved watching those UNLV Runnin Rebels 87-92, even though they beat us in the Sweet 16 in 87, awesome stuff, finally getting the rest he truly deserves
 
RIP Tark.

The FACT is, in Vegas terms, he did it his way. He tapped into JUCO before anyone else. He had a Pete Carroll-like way of allowing kids to have fun and make the program about them--not him. Recruits loved it, Vegas loved it, they kicked ass, they were fun to watch, and the establishment hated it. He built a power in a non-traditional power. Knocking the hell out of the golden boy Duke was the last straw.

Hell, Tark just might be partly responsible for the cartel we have now. No way should the little guy ever be allowed to do what he did.

BYU football in 1984 was the part of the eventual BCS mess when they won the National Title that year. Too bad we lost a heartbreaker to them that season. :tickedoff:

I'm actually interested in what the mod-man was saying. What connection has 1984 BYU football with the BCS? Can you explain? No comprendo
 
I always liked the way Tark teams played ball. I got to see him coach Fresno in the NCAA tourney back when I was a young man. Rooted for them in the loss that day. Programs might've been a little dirty but they were pretty fun to watch! College athletics are a hella lot dirtier then people think anyway and most turn a blind eye. So its not like he was part of the worst of that kind of stuff more like par for the course. Dude could coach and entertain. Loved the towel in the mouth and saw it live myself. RIP TARK THE SHARK.

Oh I hate Duke too so kicking their ass in a national title is pretty sweet. Too bad they lost the next one but that was a legendary Duke team as well.
