JayDee Luster Named Captain

This guy is one hell of a point guard. There is no doubt that he is undersized, but the kid is still a very, very good basketball player. He won't be a huge help as far as scoring goes (although he is quickly learning how to score at this level), but I do believe he will create some major problems for opposing defenses off of the dribble. This guy is stunningly quick and has the best court vision I have seen in a long time. The other players better have their hands ready 100% of the time because this guy can find them at any given time. He will also get his fair share of steals. He anticipates well and can jump the passing lanes because of his deceptive quickness. He is a perfect fit to help get Manzano and Muojeke the ball in good scoring position. Next season could be very exciting.

the thing with JayDee is what happens when he gets posted up? dont get me wrong I'am excited to see him play and think he will be a fine point guard for us, but he could be exposed on defence. imo

I say let them post him up. Posting up and playing with their back to the basket usually isn't a strong point for most PG's anyways. As long as he is willing to bang down low and not get pushed around, as well as the ability to hold his arms up, he will be just fine on defense. It isn't exactly as if the opposing PG is going to have a wide open layup just because he has a few extra inches on the guy guarding him. Tyson Johnson was undersized on quite a few occasions, but he played tough and nobody ever noticed. Plus, if he gets a few steals a game (which I fully expect him to), then those extra posessions for us/lost posessions for the other team will be HUGE in close games.

I guess what I'am trying to say is when he gets caught in a switch with lets say 4 man, it will be extreamly tough to stop that. I hope your correct, but this a concern of mine.

I have never seen JayDee play, so I have to go from what I have heard and I have read both good and bad comments from people from New Mexico and New Mexico State (who may be biased and a little angry about him leaving down there). If he can defend like Williams from SDSU and handle and pass the ball like I have heard and run the offense well, then I don't care how big he is. I think we will be ok at PG.

I've seen him play in pratice, and he is one the quickest guys I've seen on a basketball court. I like the comparison to Williams. some SDSU fans on the MWC board made that same remark about Luster when we first got him. like I said, I think he will be a very good player for us, maybe I'am worrying to much about his height.

"His 559 career steals ranked third in national high school basketball history and were the second most in California high school history."

"Luster had hopes of matching Jason Kidd as only the second high school player in history to score 2,000 points, dish out 1,000 assists and record 500 steals in a career. Unfortunately, an injury ended Luster’s senior season early and he fell just short of that milestone."

I'm thinking/hoping Jaydee may be the second coming of Sean Dent. Sean, if I remember right, was a little taller, but extremely quick. In fact, Dave Walsh's nickname for him was the "Prince of Pilfer." Sean frequently had double-digit assists and a fair amount of steals per game. Sean wasn't without his liabilities, mainly shooting. Defenses would often sag off Sean to try to clog the middle. It sounds like Jaydee may be a better shooter than Sean. I guess the point I'm making is that it appears Heath may be looking at using Jaydee that same as Brandenburg used Sean and that worked out just fine.

Dude can shoot too from way I saw when I was in Wyoming he was the only guy shooting and he definabtly didn't miss much I'm excited to see him
