Jake Jones and other stuff

Was it me or did Jake really struggle last night? When he pulled, he missed his block. When he was pass blocking, he missed his blocks. When he run blocked, he regularly looked like a matador.

I also thought our backs blocked for crap.

I hope we see more screens. With the "pin the ears back" approach from most defenses, I think they would be effective...just like our scoring play in the second half.

Finally, does it concern anyone that the Tampa 2 weaknesses are so glaring that the tv announcer repeatedly commented on it? Is it truly an antiquated defense or is it our personnel?

I think many people noticed the struggle. I didn't get to watch the game but I have seen some comments on here, and some texts pointing out how bad he was.

Can't say for myself though.

I said it in the other thread, too, but you have to have decent pass rush to effectively run the Tampa 2 (or Cover 2). Secondly, everyone has to tackle; everyone. We lack that in the secondary. You also need a lot more speed than we do.

You can line up the same but drop 1 safety into the middle and then have the other come up into coverage. It helps shore up some gaps and keeps the LB from dropping back but are more exposed to deeper routes. I don't know, but our scheme needs adjustment for our personnel.

Wasn't just Jake Jones. Traphagan the right tackle routinely got beat in the B gap on backside runs. This led to Wick getting pulled down from behind on critical 3rd down runs. That was purely lack of effort and these guys wilted in the Hawaiian humidity. The first drive looked great. After that the line was gassed. Cummings was pretty darn good for his first start. One bbright spot on the O line. Also why isn't Hardy playing? That guy is a beast! But I never saw him in the game.

Yep. Was very impressed with Cummings. Left side actually did pretty well.

Hardy is still hurt. High Ankle sprain I believe.

This is my major concern. Nobody really runs the Tampa 2 anymore at least with much success. I hope they know what they are doing and if it isn't going to work they are not too stubborn to make changes.

MSU? But otherwise, yeah. Though Nebraska's defense is doing better this season.
