IU unveils Student-Athlete Bill of Rights

While this isn't directly tied to UW or the MWC, it is going to be an emerging trend in college sports and thus will eventually affect UW.

Indiana released a "Student-Athlete Bill of Rights". Ten points establishing or reinforcing rights for student athletes at IU. Some interesting points on here:
1) A lifetime guarantee to athletes to complete their degree if leaving school early as long as they were eligible for at least 2 years;
2) Lifetime use of the school's career placement center after graduation;
3) An iPad tablet and school blazer for each student-athlete;
4) A guarantee that student-athletes can receive medical care at no cost, including insurance deductibles and co-pays (this may have already been present at the school, but it is actually somewhat rare in college athletics, a lot of schools make athletes/families pay the deductible/co-pay).

Some very interesting points and certainly a glimpse into the future of where college athletics is heading.

1. Would depend on why they left, like to transfer to another school.
2. Why? They educate you and give you the best possible chance to further your own career. After you graduate, it's up to you.
3. A blazer, ok, I guess. But why an ipad of all things? You can't do homework on it, all it is, is an entertainment device. Get your own!
4. As long as they're affliated with the university as a student-athlete, especially in a contact sport, I can live with that. Outside of that, they can go through the school to get insuruance like many other students do.

I thought I saw a tweet that UW football players get iPads now as well? Don't they get their playbooks etc on them?

Lol I think the part about the iPad and blazer is absolutely ridiculous!
Very short-sighted, and greedy, and 100% IRRELEVANT compared to a career after football, health care after football, and continuing education after football.

Most of those are very good points, then some short sighted idiots said "hey man lemme get an iPad or something dope like that..oh and a blazer! I want everyone to know why I got this iPad!"

A laptop I could understand, as you would be able to do school work and use it for a future career. An iPad? Not so much. A blazer? Well, you'd be sporting the school's colors and mascot, so free advertisement there.

I agree it sort of doesn't fit but I think a lot of programs get them for playbooks.....health care and graduation are the main ones....

Beav, I highly doubt they had more than a few student-athletes involved in this process, and the few they did would be SAC leaders, not ones who are just going to demand more "swag".

The blazer is free advertising and brand recognition.

The iPad is a recruiting tool, nothing more...

While I think the comment about an ipad/blzaer was rather out of place and not even sure why they were mentioned now I have to semi defend it because the majority of you don't seem to realize laptops were yesterdays world.

You can easily go to school at any College and use an ipad for any and every class and probably a rough guess that 65% or better business professionals use a tablet of some type. If you look at this the right way just an example 100 athletes fly to X for a sporting event. Out of those 100 kids if they all had laptops maybe 10 would use them but give them a small light weight tablet and it's probably closer to 60.

Colleges investing in tablets to help student athletes After pilot program with basketball teams, University of Akron hopes to give iPads to all 30,000 students in the future

It feels out of place being #3 on the list I could accept it being #10 and having something else said about that detracts from it. Like with your tuition here is a bunch of shit you get and the ipad is included in all that.

Anyway it's good to see that all tat money the student Athlete makes for the school is finally going to be at least partially returned to them in some form.

Anyway the days of a laptop being the mobile computer is long gone. Tablet can do everything a laptop can do at a fraction of the cost.

+1

I think all these things are a good thing. Anything we can do to assist these athletes with the student side of student athlete is a good thing. Most of the time while they are competeing we don't emphasize it enough. Even the ipad and blazer are good things. The ipad to help with studies and playbook. The blazer cuz many times kids need to dress up and look professional but its not realistic to make some of the kids buy a suit coat so provide him with one so he will always have it.

Yes and yes. I asked one of the freshman after they tweeted it.

On that note, these freshmen are very respectful to fans reaching out and encouraging them.
