It wasn't the loss that disappointed me...

As much as it was the performance on myriad levels.

The loss? Even though I felt they had a good chance to break the seal, I also mentioned that they could very well lose this game and that it would hardly surprise me.

Of course I wanted a win (I always want a win), but in a season where the W's & L's are less significant to me than they will be in ensuing years, what I wanted mostly, was to see continuing signs of growth and progress, building upon many of the positives that we saw in last week's loss to WSU.

You may mention the ND loss, and the loss to EMU as disturbing losses, but to me, this game yesterday was the most dispiriting one to date - simply because they regressed and didn't build on the positives from the week before.

I started wondering how well this game would go when I was down on the field prior to the game. Now anyone can place too much stock in what I'm about to mention...then again maybe there is something semi-significant to it. During warm-ups I noticed that New Mexico was on point completely, they seemed genuinely excited to play the game, their workouts and every warm-up they did in preparing for the game was done with precision, with enthusiasm, with an organized approach that reeked of absolute preparedness.

Conversely, I felt that Wyoming looked pretty much the opposite. They appeared to look almost unmotivated to a certain extent, almost going through the motions, they lacked the crispness that I noticed with the guys wearing red and white. This was really surprising to me - because if there was ever a team that needed to come into a game sporting a fever pitch - it was our guys. Is this coaching? I have to believe that if it was then that is pretty disturbing - especially for a guy like me who is very bullish (and I still am) on our current regime. Bob Davie's team looked ready to play and looked like they wanted to play. Us? I can't say the same.

Perhaps the first play from scrimmage was the harbinger of what was to come. Jhurell Pressley takes the handoff and the Wyoming defensive front appears to be in position to set the tone early with a tackle for loss. I mean they had Pressley dead to rights. Not one guy, not two, but THREE players ALL whiffed on the tackle. Most of you saw it. One by one, in order, Andrew Wingard (who we all love), Marcus Epps, and Lucas Wacha, all swung and missed...if you look at the replay its hard not to laugh, they go down in succession, thud, thud, thud...a 13 yard gain on a play that should have been a 5 yard loss. The next play goes for what only feels like the 15th TD run of 40 yards or more in the first 4 games. Last week we had hats on the ball, we swarmed to the point of attack way better than we did yesterday...not good.

The balance we established last week on offense with the run and the pass never materialized and we became one-dimensional for most of the game...even though the play calling by Vigen seemed almost force fed to the point of insisting the Pokes run the ball come hell or high water, results be dammed.

One week prior we saw some daylight and we saw both our offensive and defensive lines winning individual battles as well as collective unit battles throughout the night in Pullman. Not yesterday. We were once again mauled in the pits, shoved around...perhaps not as badly as the games against ND and EMU, but still, we lacked a ferocity along both lines today. Youth? Yes, but what about the lack of execution and the inability to stay disciplined with all the penalties? Youth again? Okay, but when will we begin to see the maturation and the elimination of some of these issues?

The confidence that I saw begin to slowly build last week didn't come close to manifesting itself yesterday with any carryover effect. Disappointing.

Don't get the wrong idea, I'm still as high on Bohl as I have ever been, but I, like all of us, was very disappointed with the failure to 'build upon' some of the positives from a week ago.

Questions for all here:

1-Coffman finished with numbers that would compel someone to think he was amazing today if they didn't actually see the game. I thought his day was made to look better than it really was based upon his yardage total and the amount of times he put it in the air - and 2 TD's he was credited with that were somewhat unconventional. Gentry made an incredible catch with that toe drag, otherwise that throw is too far to the right (but I credit Coffman for even getting off the pass under such duress) -- and the final TD pass was off a deflection to Harshman. Coffman's decision making is sometimes unsteady -- but I'm probably being too critical given the fact that he's under pressure a lot. The wide open Hollister that he missed down the right sideline, instead throwing into double coverage that resulted in an interception is a sign of what I refer to as unsteady decision making. And if anyone can tell me who Coffman was throwing to on that last INT I'd be thrilled to know. Coffman is an upgrade over last year's starter (CK) but the more I see him and the more I feel like I know why he was eventually phased out at Indiana. Am I being too harsh in my critique of Coffman?

2-While I love being bold and being fearless at times, I thought Bohl's decision to go for it on our first drive eschewing a potential (was it 38 yards?) field goal by Tristen Bailey to go for it on 4th and 11, turned out to be a mistake. Bailey is going to have to start making some 3-pointers eventually, and if he isn't capable then the sooner the better to find the guy who will be able to afford the team a dimension on offense they apparently don't possess at this juncture. Bohl on 4th & 11 - would you have attempted a FG?

3-I HATE our defense. Not the players so much - but the actual system. It is too much of a template to me, it can be attacked and exploited through study, and you let your opponent's run away from our best defensive lineman (Yarbrough) effectively neutralizing your most game-changing player. I know Eddie is a prototypical pass rushing DE, but its here where I'd be more ambitious and creative. I'd allow Yarbrough to freelance more, placing him in positions where the offense may not expect him, taking advantage of his athleticism and explosiveness, while making him more of a wild-card than a guy who offenses know where to look to find him. Stand him up, move him around, allow him more flexibility and the opportunity to make a beeline to the ball from different angles more often. Our linebackers, small and undersized to begin with, play way too far off the ball imo...even on very short yardage situations our LB's are a good 5-6 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Push them up, create some confusion for the offense...when was the last time we saw a corner blitz, anyone? Our defense is too damn predictable, it doesn't stress an attack and disrupt approach, its way too much read and react...not too mention we have undersized players and we still need to acquire more speed to contain the edges.

I guess I'm venting for the first time this year in a way...a loss I can take, especially because reality smacks me in the eyes with the fact that on most Saturday's we're going to be out-talented by most teams we play. What annoyed me yesterday was a loss without any real positives - especially positives that were not transferable from one week against WSU -- to yesterday's game against New Mexico.

I too, was equally disappointed with this performance.
To your point 1:
As soon as Coffman had that horrid misread and int into double coverage, HE WAS GONE! I saw him on the sidelines. Not being a leader. Sitting by himself almost literally sulking. He was completely dejected. And at that point I had an OC's sixth sense that he was going to fall apart and probably "force" a turnover by his next opportunity... Sure enough. Int # 2. Now in seeing the replay from the endzone camera I saw what he saw and also what he didn't see. He was forcing the pass, but UNM's cox was blocked from his vision by a lineman who was in between both of them. The pass I believe was headed for Price who was doing a Post route. Even had the int not occurred that pass was going to be about 4 feet behind the WR's head. After that he was lucky any passes were even caught. He was throwing everything from flying poo to lame ducks at that point. He needs to overcome these things fast if he wants to be successful. He needs to step up and be a leader, not hide behind everyone on the bench!

2. Obviously Bailey or Wood or whoever it may be is not instilling ANY trust in Bohl throughout the week at kicking FG's. So I'm with him. Why have a kid who is blowing in practice go out in a game and blow it. And it must be pretty bad when Bohl and Co. Think they have a better shot at converting a LONG 4th down.
Why are there no questions to Bohl about those decisions during the post game press conference?

Point3. I can see the potential for the Tampa 2 if run correctly. I've never coached against it, so I'm not super familiar with it. But what I have seen on it, when it is set with talent it can be pretty brutal. We are set with youth trying to put it all together right now. I do think in a few years a lot of these younger guys will make this scheme look pretty good.

Overall, when you are working toward your first win it's hard not to come out flat. These guys need some motivation.
Next week may be rough down at Appy. They just decimated ODU 49-0!
Our guys need to come out hard. And the need to shore up these stupid penalties! Pretty bad when most are on your OL. Chop blocking? Really? And it was painfully obvious... And our Wr's need to figure out what they are doing. They are the second most penalized unit on the team.

Kansas...I am not a coach, so would love your insights on this statement. I always appreciate your informed view and very much want to hear more on this point. I seldom hear coaches mention that the Tampa 2 can be brutal. Absent big mad mean defensive linemen, which we seldom get, and significant upgrades at linebacker, I am not so sure. What do you see with the Tampa 2 that leads to a sense that it can be a tough defense? Also, what talent is needed to make it so?

As for Yarborough, I don't want to bag on the guy, but I thought he had one of his poorest games yesterday. He never sealed his end, took poor angles and struggled to get off blocks. Was he double teamed? Was I missing something?

Thanks for mentioning this, KC, I noticed during the spring game that he lacks the outward leadership qualities I like my QB to have -- where Coffman does not inspire and uplift his team, the opposite is true of Josh Allen, who seems to possess a personality that rally's his club to go along with a very high upside as a QB. I appreciate his guts and ability to play through pain, but as I was listening to the post game on the way home yesterday I was puzzled as to the love-a-thon that both Dave and Kevin were having about Coffman on the radio. I will give him this, when he has time to throw he can spin a pretty football, and his TD throw to the back of the EZ to Hollister threaded a window in a small space...equally nice catch by Hollister for that TD. As to why no questions to Bohl about the Kicking game in the post game presser I would have asked him about this - but we left to take the long sojourn back to Sheridan and I wasn't there for the presser.

Neither # 55 nor #34 were factors. UNM attacked the outside with ease all day long. LBs, imo, didn't have the speed to get there.

Realistically, brown and gold glasses down...it's hard to find wins this season.

@App State - Not looking good
@Air Force - They're playing good ball.
Nevada - West Division favorite.
@Boise State - .....
@Utah State - We don't have the defense to make it happen.
Colorado State - Adrenaline? Pride? Best chance we have?
@San Diego State - Ya know...I think we have a better shot here than other places.
UNLV - My gawd I under estimated this team.

The quest to avoid 0-12 is tough. I can't see this team avoiding double digit losses.

From what I gather. You need a solid LB group. We don't have that. They don't need to be big but fast, we're getting there. The corners need to be solid at one on one coverage and jamming. We definitely don't have that yet. Preister and Wingard are our best at this and they need more time. The jamming and lbs dropping back in coverage is what is supposed to keep all offensive threats in front of us at all times. We have blunder on this in every game so far. When we do our coverage goes very soft and we basically fall out of a Tampa 2 and run a basic cover 2 or cover 3.
The DL and DE are critical in Tampa 2, and we do not have that ability yet. We seem to try to start a game in Tampa 2, but after we a blasted by long passes or big runs we tends to look more like a typical 4-3 zone read.
I agree with some of the things I've seen on Tampa 2, that if run correctly you are a bend but don't break D. Our best game was WSU. Other than a couple of long balls over our heads, our CBs and S's and LB's kept almost every play in front of them. Hence why Falk (taking out two long balls) had a average of 4.9 yards per pass catch. We made him look to quick out routes or quick inside slant hits. The D was doing its job and then one blown assignment and you had an 35 yard td pass.
In looking at it as an overall package (not wyoming D personally) if I had an average O at the college level I think I could come up with a Pistol package that would exploit the D. But it would have to take multiple sets and reads to confuse the D enough to get the D to bite on something for me to have the opportunity for a big play down field. If the T2 is run correctly it can definitely have the potential to be a headache for an Offense and an OC.

All that said, I hope I answered your question. If you want something a little more specific try me again. I'm running on 5 hrs of sleep in the last two days. I may have blundered, myself here.

I watched Yarborough the entire second half and every snap he would make contact with the tackle and push him towards the center. Its like his whole assignment was to close the gaps up the middle by pushing a unm player into it. Thats on the position coach or DC. Especially against an option team. He never tried to get off the block, just push.

You guys make it sound like you can do a bunch of stuff against the option. If you have them 3rd and 10, you might be able to blitz or something but if they run the option again, you might give up 15

The thing that got me was all the boneheaded penalties and highly questionable play calling by Vigen well into the 2nd half of the game.
"They load up the box again? Well, just because they stuffed the run up the middle the last dozen times doesn't mean they won't this time!"
or
"Hmmm, 3rd and 11, let's try a play action pass! It worked in NCAA 12 quite well!"
or
"3rd and 22... I got it! We'll try a screen pass to the short side of the field! It's guaranteed!"

I agree that the lack of improvement is disappointing. I'm not sure if it really is lack of improvement or simply quality of opponent (i.e. WSU is just that bad). Here are my thoughts:

Bohl doesn't walk on water. I think he and his staff bought into their own self generated hype and are now experiencing a reality check. I don't give a damn about brick by brick and all that other crap. It is unusual, borderline unacceptable, and not a good sign to see a program demolished to this state. In fact, it is perfectly fair for this to be concerning. Bohl, for me, has transitioned from "I know he is the right man for the job" to "I think he is the right man for the job". We'll see how this progresses, and I think it will be fine, but it sure as hell is not a guarantee to be fine.

The T2 sucks. It is great if you have better players than the other team and the other team runs a west-coast style O. The spread and the option can wreak havoc on this D. It will work if we consistently have beasts along the line, good corners who can force things inside, and LBs that can cover. I don't know. Again, we'll see.

My concern when Bohl was hired was the viability of his O at WYO. I can say that after a few games, I can see how it will work. I'm much less concerned about the style of O than before. The play calling, on the other hand.

Stanard and Vigen should have a pretty short leash.

All in all, this year, IMO, should accelerate Bohl's timeline. This 5 more year crap is for the birds. If this is truly an investment, then it better pay off in the next year or two otherwise blowing up this program was stupid.

Not to be too crabby, sorry, but that makes absolutely no sense.

I agree with ragtime. I have gone from "Bohl is the guy" to..."uhhhh I hope Bohl is the guy". there are a a lot of things that don't look good, but I would say the defense is the biggest problem. Our offense is scoring and showing signs of life. But our Defense is abysmal. I mean...really bad. Really really bad. I questioned the Stanard hire from the moment it happened....I am hoping Bohl will be willing to adjust and Stanard definitely needs to be on a short leash. I trust Vigen a little bit more.

i hope Eddie starts getting mad at this fiasco and goes off on his own, yeah it seems like we play extremely tight at home, maybe going to App St this weekend could be just what the doctor orders
