It ain't the coaches, fellas

We need players.

God love our boys and the effort they put out -- and a number are showing real promise -- but we need more. SDSU is better than us, and showed it on the field. And it wasn't their coaching. It was their players.

So why do they have Denegal, for instance? Why the heck did that young man leave Michigan? How have they kept Trey White? We all know the answer: it's because they make sure they're paid.

We're going to have to do the same. Or we are if we want to compete at the top of our conference. Hard to say what it takes -- $2mm a year for our roster every year? $1mm? $3mm? -- but that's the new world of college sports. That's the world that accounts for all the parity in college football now. We'll choose to do it or not.

If we don't do it, then I suppose we can just bitch about our coaches and expect them to pull rabbits out of hats. It is apparently the God-given right and duty of football fans to call for the firing of their coordinators and coaches...hell, until earlier this year a good chunk of OSU's fans wanted Ryan Day fired.

These guys took a seasoned roster that just won 9 games and were hired with the excuse of the importance of continuity for not taking a step back. They then tanked the program against even against the weakest schedule in WYO history.

Yeah, it's the coaches. I suppose if they had vastly superior talent to anyone on the schedule, they may not screw it up. If talent is slightly better or worse, these guys are losing.

Agree. It’s apparent that the move to keep continuity with the defense was a good strategy. What’s also apparent is absolutely nothing was done to address serious deficiencies with the offense.

I put that squarely on Sawful. If he couldn’t see the deficiencies in his first spring practice it just shows the utter ineptitude at assembling a decent team. The offense was not seriously addressed in an urgent manner to enhance production. Even our schemes don’t get executed effectively or else our players are so easily defended they can’t do anything better.

The current trend is 4-2 against losers in 2025 and 0-3 against winners. 2 winners and 1 loser remaining in 2025 giving us a 67% chance at improving to 5-7 and a 0% chance at reaching 6-6.

I don't understand why both can't be true...we would be better with a coach like Bohl (or...please God...better) at the helm...and if you can't see the talent gap they you are just not looking.

Good point. But unless we pay talent on the field we're going nowhere....no matter if Sawvel disappeared and we brought in James Franklin, Brian Kelly, Dabo Swinney, and Belichick.

Oh, forget that....they all suck too. But you get my point.

Blame the players instead of the coaches, if you want to. I disagree. Coaches recruit these players to fit their systems. If the players stink, the coaches recruited the wrong players. It is up to coaches to put their players in position for success. They fail repeatedly to do so. Poor game management is on the head coach and not the players.

The buck stops with the coaches for sure. The criticism of coaches usually centers on their in-game decisions and who they choose to play where....when a bigger part of that criticism should be ... "hey...if you can't get some studs in here, you aren't good enough"!
