I support Wyoming’s move from the FBS to the FCS.
While I wasn’t born and raised in Wyoming, I did attend from 2013-2016, and I have an appreciation for the program. Despite that loyalty, it's clear that Wyoming’s football future in the FBS is limited, and the reasons for transitioning to the FCS are compelling.
Firstly, Wyoming’s pursuit of major success in the next generation of college athletics is unlikely to pan out. The landscape of FBS football has evolved into a game of “haves” and “have-nots,” and it’s apparent we’ve been left behind in that regard. Larger programs with more resources have created an environment that we cannot keep up with. Moving to the FCS would allow us to cultivate regional rivalries and focus on competing to be the best at a more attainable level, and I believe Wyoming could be a strong contender there.
One of the strongest arguments for moving to FCS is the postseason structure. The FCS playoff system offers a much clearer and cleaner path to meaningful post-season play. The outdated and, in some cases, flawed bowl system in the FBS provides limited opportunities for a school like Wyoming. Even if we were to make a Group of Five playoff spot, the likelihood of facing national embarrassment on such a stage is high. In FCS, we’d have a legitimate shot at playoff success and could, in theory, regularly compete for a national championship. That "in theory" simply doesn't exist as the landscape currently exists.
Geographically, Wyoming is well-positioned to compete with some of the top FCS schools, particularly those within our region. With Colorado State University (CSU) no longer in the Mountain West, the value of staying in this conference is diminishing, leaving us little reason to cling to the FBS.
Now, I recognize there would be some lost revenue in moving from FBS to FCS, but this is a trade-off worth considering. Would we rather be stuck at the bottom of the “top league” or be real contenders in the “next best thing”? The financial savings, reduced expenses (NIL), and operational costs could make this a more sustainable option for the university in the long run.
IMO, moving to the FCS allows Wyoming to be competitive, financially responsible, and aligned with a more regional, fan-engaged model of football.
I'd rather not see us spend our time, talent, and treasure chasing our outdated dreams of FBS glory that we’re unlikely to achieve.
