Cal also played in the Pac12. With real defenses. And the Pac12 was loaded with QBs last season, meaning he had to win shootouts to beat them, not to mention they also played Ohio State and Northwestern (who was ranked 22nd at the time)
And Cal was still 10th in the country in pass yards.
Cal had to face Braxton Miller, Sean Mannion, Marcus Mariota, Keith Price, Connor Halliday, Brett Hundley, and Kevin Hogan.
That's a tough schedule for a true freshman.
Not sure where I am really going with this, but their defense also sucked, it wasn't really because of their true freshman QB. Cals best games defensively were giving up 30 to Portland State, 33 to Arizona, and 37 to UCLA. The rest were in the 40s (5 times), 50s (2 times), 60s (2 times).
