IF CSU goes to the Big XII

Big 12 is looking East, and all signs point to the AAC getting gutted.

Big time IMO. My guess...they'll add 4 from the AAC OR grab BYU and 3 from AAC. Either way...C-USA will be nervous 'cos as soon as the AAC loses some schools, the AAC will invite a few from C-USA. And then C-USA will add from the Sun Belt.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of four of the five G5 conferences. You laid out a path of realignment that is quite realistic. I also think it's possible that the five conferences realign in a way that they actually dissolve into four. With the potential mass poaching from Power 5 conferences expanding from 12 to 16 teams, it won't take very long. Not to mention the talk of the MWC possibly expanding.

I believe we could see the AAC and C-USA eventually merge into one conference if enough teams depart from the two leagues.

I think that'll have to happen eventually.

For the first time years since I started reading up on conference realignment since 1989-90 (when Penn State accepted their invitation to join the Big 10 three years later), I quite honestly have no clue what the Mountain West will do in all of this!!!

One way or the other, we're likely going to know fairly soon. Big 12 has stated that they want to decide on expansion before the season starts. 4 weeks.

csewe no longer views Wyoming as a rival (in football anyway). The game would end. The game between csewe and CU always gets a big crowd at mile high so that game would live on. Csewe would continue playing Air Force above us.
I would imagine we would still play them in BB (game always gets a big crowd down here - thanks LS). We've made our bed the last 15 plus years and now we have to live with the fact that we are the weakest draw in an already weak conference.

If CSU gets in and they have to pick between the CU game (always played in Mile High Stadium in front of a big crowd) and the Wyoming game you can do the math there. No way they're picking Border War over their in-state rivalry game (which would be a much better strength of schedule against another P5 school as well).

You're right though...it could effectively end the UW vs. CSU rivalry (at least in football).

This is one area where Wyoming shines and really screwed up. A few years ago Nebraska offered to play us a long series of games in Mile High Stadium. We did the 2 for 1 deal instead. Wyoming was being good to its fans. We should have bit off on it and got Denver riled up to come watch the Cowboys and Cornhuskers.

Maybe we still can. Its good marketing. I hate it.

No. CSU would continue playing us. We're still considered a rival. I don't know where all this is coming from

Obviously there's a huge chance CSU drops us if it gets into Big XII, but it's not an either/or with UW and Colorado. Colorado is a Pac team and if Big XII follows scheduling habits of B1G, SEC, ACC, the teams get a bit of a pass for scheduling other big conference teams.
The more likely question is are the games against UW or Air Force getting better TV ratings? That team will play CSU every three years with the other once or twice a decade.

That's like saying byu & utah are no longer rivals.

Not quite. Those schools are in state rivals and very close together. The games are competitive and both programs have had significant success. Laramie has hardly changed in 35 years while northern Colorado is the fastest growing region in the country. Rivalry games get big crowds. The UW - csewe game has had terrible attendance for several years now.

I know many of you posters like to post how good we were in the 80's and early 90's. I remember those Roach - Tiller days. However, time goes on and most recent csewe alumni have no idea why this rivalry exists. csewe recruits mostly out of Colorado now. It's time for some of you to wake up and realize that our football program is a laughing stock and NO ONE we play circles a date with UW as having any significance whatsoever. They made their mistake with Fairchild and wisely got rid of him after 3 years. Will we be that smart after this season? We never do anything smart.

I think the rivalry would probably die in time. They'd schedule us but I doubt ithat would be yearly. Especially at first, I doubt they'd schedule us at all. I don't think they'd want a fierce rivalry game in the pre-conference slate let alone 2.

As a CSU fan, let me first start by saying I think it is a long shot that CSU gets an invite. However, it does appear CSU is in the conversation from all that I have read. If by chance CSU did make it, I think there would be a strong desire by the fan base to keep the WYO game on the schedule. The annual game vs. Colorado is certainly a game most CSU fans want to win, but WYO isn't far behind. I would love to see an annual game with WYO and CU moving forward. That would leave two OOC openings on the schedule and in an ideal world CSU would play: (1) Colorado, (2) Wyoming, (3) G5 opponent (in an important recruiting area), (4) P5 opponent. That should be the setup every year if CSU were somehow lucky enough to get into the Big12 - IMO.
