How important is it to upgrade housing discussion

Crane and Hill are scheduled to be torn down in the next 2-4 years. You'll more than likely see some sort of public private partnership build some new facilities on the site. There is about 0% chance the state gives UW money to build new dorms. It just isn't a high enough priority to the state legislature.

Ugh - I hope not. Businesses are great - but they only have one thing on their mind - making money. That will just increase the costs of getting an education at UW.

CSU just went through this process with their dorms and the students down there really like them. They will pay more for nice shit and be happy to do it. The cost of an education at UW? Are you kidding me? If that was a driver for enrollment we would have 50k students here. Cost means nothing.

I think investment in science and lab space is money well spent. If they're smart and strategic about the lab space they build, they have an opportunity to really increase the research money our school receives and that has a huge impact on the ranking of your institution.

I'd have to agree - and it also comes with the benefit of more potential tech jobs in the area, which tend to pay decently well. The Front Range is super heavy with tech companies and is getting expensive as a result. The Laramie area would do well to try to poach some of these companies from here.

I wouldn't say "cost means nothing" because that is simply not true. However, cost is one factor among several competing ones that potential students have to balance out.

One of the big issues in this year's Democratic presidential primary process was the consequences that flow from the "cost means nothing" approach that several colleges, universities, and families took toward education costs and amenities in recent years. I doubt that the "cost means nothing" approach will be as tolerable as it seemed in the recent past.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing additional on-campus living space. Maybe they should look at replacing Crane/Hill with one of those quads to start with? Another possibility might be to look at doing the new quad-dorms at the northwestern corner of campus and still retain the high-rises as a less-costly alternative for students than the new dorms would inevitably be?
