Hope Thompson redshirts

Jason Thompson seems like a bad ass. I think that he has the talent to start on many MWC teams this season. With that said, I hope he does not see the field once this season. And I think we all know why. Brett Smith. Nuff said.
If Thompson can redshirt this year, then he will be a redshirt sophomore during Smiths senior year. Then have 2 years to start after that.
I hope that anytime Smith comes out of the game it is because we are up by 30 points in the second half. In that case, if it were to happen (before anyone over-reacts to this one sentence, I said IF it were to happen...) I hope that Kirkgaard comes in and plays. No point in wasting a potential year of eligibility if we are destroying a team.
Obviously if Smith is hurt and the game or games are in doubt, I think we play Thompson, but if we have the game secured and then Smith gets a minor injury I think play Colby.

Depth chart if playing Colby has no effect on game/season
1. Brett Smith.
2. Colby Kirkgaurd
3. (RS) Thompson

If choice needs to be made depth chart goes
1. Brett Smith
2. Thompson
3. Kirkgaard

During the practice live blog, I asked Gags if Thompson has resolved osme of his passing issues. Namely, accuracy and control. Those are still a work in progress. If he can get those up without losing overall arm strength, he'll be a good successor to Smith.

I actually would love to see him RS as well. What scares me about that is imagine if Brett gets hurt and DC doesn't want to yank his RS for a second season. That would leave K-gaard to run the team. That's scary. He's there and he's playing and I have to give him credit but he has no business being on a D-1 roster. He has no sense of the game around him and doesn't seem to have the arm to make even short passes. Thinking about a scenario like this makes my stomach turn.

If for some reason, IMO, we ever had to rely on Kirkegaard....we would be much better off with Sam Stratton.

I don't know why he doesn't get reps at QB. He was fairly successful a few years ago in the "wildcat" package.

1 game. Against BSU. And all he did was run the ball. Effectively, but I don't think he threw it once.

I watched Stratton through his entire high school career at qb. I would most definitely take him over Kirk, he had a pretty decent arm and was athletic so he could be a decent backup in our offense.

Kirkegaard is a liability anytime he drops back to pass. The Cowboys would be better off running the ball every play than letting Kirkegaard pass.

I really Like Jason. He is an athletic big body. He still has some passing issues but holy hell does he have a cannon! In the scrimmage he threw a couple 60 plus yards in the air!

I truly believe that if he can redshirt this year, and get 2 years starting after Brett Smith is gone, Wyo could have 2 QBs get drafted back to back. Not back to back years, but back to back QBs.
Brett Smith has the attention of a lot of people, and he has done all that as an underclassmen.
This season, and next season Brett Smith should be getting a lot more NFL scout attention.
Then Thompson might be able to come in and do what Smith has done.
Thompson is quick, and I think a very good QB.
And I know that a lot of people on the team think he is a baller. When he is an upperclassmen starting...watch out.

I would like to see Thompson redshirt as well. The problem is that I just can't see Smith making it through an entire season unscathed with the aggressive way he plays and the poor protection we provide.

Don't get me wrong, Thompson has a cannon arm and stubborn as a bull when running. But he has to work on his accuracy and touch more in order to be a truly viable back up QB. Some people rip on Brett's arm strength, well, it's easy to improve that, and he has been. Last season, his long balls got where they needed to be, and heh ad the accuracy and touch to hit his reciever in stride. Thompson can fire off his throws pretty well, but they tend to be too high and too much juice on them for the reciever right now.
