Honeymoon over

Can we see a new QB?
I don't care who the backup is. But we need another option. Svoboda could not have played any worse. In fact, I'm so tired of the horrible passing game we've had over the years that I'm starting to think we should run the triple option and throw about 6 passes a game.

Need to give Anderson a shot. Svboda blows

No discipline. But hey, at least we blare music at practice and have last names on the jerseys. Welcome to the Sawvel grabass era.

I think that Bohl inherited a pretty bleak situation when he stepped in. The cupboard was pretty bare. So the answer is no. But let's give it some time before we get out the pitchforks. It's not like we were great on the road under Bohl. Obviously, to get boat raced by the team predicted to finish 16th in the big 12 is not a great start. But watching Svoboda throw those picks is giving me awful visions of Levi Williams.

This sentence. The current state of college football and the pursuit of that TV $$$.

Sawvell needs to work on his body language. That arms-folded pout thing he had going was more pathetic than the product on the field. Suck it up and lead your joes. Set the example. No wonder they fucking quit.

That performance was 95% on the coaching staff. They didn’t have the team ready to play, did not make any adjustments when things started poorly, and looked like pouty children on the sideline every time they were shown on camera. That’s not even considering the countless undisciplined penalties.

This is what happens when you let the players pick their coach. That approach doesn’t even work when you let fully grown professional men do it. Why would it work for a bunch of college age men?

I can’t help but think that this coaching staff is going to be a complete failure. I know it is only one game, but that was the worst coaching performance I’ve seen in a very long time. If the athletic department had the balls (and the funds), I would can this entire coaching staff and move on at the end of the year. It’s likely going to be a very long season.

I didn't expect us to win a game opener with a new head coach on the road in 100 degree heat, but I did expect that we played a respectable game.

I went to bed at half time when we had more penalty yards than we had offensive yards. That was the least disciplined team I've seen take the field in many years.

10 points off of turnovers. Defense slowed ASU from scoring as fast as they want, but that is about it. Our 118 yards of offense to 499 of ASU's.

We better have a big improvement from game 1 to game 2 or we are in big trouble.

I do love the names on jerseys though. I memorized half the team last night watching the game. Previously, I wouldn't know who half the team was (other than their position) by the end of the season.

Embarassing, regardless.

Why?
Yea. Once we get past the Idaho’s, North Texas and SJSU’s of the world…it’s all downhill.
3 of 1st 5 are a on the road P5 (didn't go well)and a couple rivalry-type games. I thought Idaho was a gimmie..maybe not now lol. I also thought North TX was going to be a tougher than expected early season game.

Went to bed at half. Looks like Koenning all over again.

At this point (morning after one of the worst performances I've seen), the voices that I have been trying to keep at bay are coming back. Since Bohl stepped down, I have been tempering my expectations. The knee-jerk off-season optimism of my youth has long since been replaced with a jaded and cynical view of college football. That being said, after Bohl's tenure that was characterized by well-played, disciplined, though perhaps un-imaginative football, I had allowed myself to test the waters of optimism. I thought "Perhaps we can transition to a new coach and maintain the good things of the past coach while adding in something new". That theory is on life support right now. I did not expect to win last night but I figured it would be somewhat close. That was really really really bad.

It is clear that Svoboda was given a very short leash last year. Now, he is being asked to do a lot more. He can't make the reads and he isn't very accurate. The coaches see him in practice every day. You would think they would know his limitations and work around them. 307's post above really sums up my thoughts. The floor with Bohl was 6 wins. But the ceiling wasn't a lot higher. Well, now the floor looks so far below we can't even see it. The coaches are going to have to reevaluate everything we thought we could do on offense and scale it way back. I don't care if we go back to 3 yards and a cloud of dust. It's pretty obvious the notion we would have a balanced attack is out the window.
