Not fair to set lofty goals? Says the guy who wrote an article saying anything less than a bowl game would be a disappointment and now criticizes fans for saying this year has been a disappointment...

The only goal I have is that this team will exceed expectations. Finish higher than the preseason poll, win some games they weren't expected to, don't lose too many games they aren't supposed to, and see what happens in March.

Side note: I'm kinda getting annoyed at Holmgren's approach to writing of feeling the need to tell people how to be fans...

I agree with Holmgren 100%. Shyatt knows what i takes to build a program and I think that's what he's doing. The one it really sucks for is Josh but he had his glory last year and I think he'll average 20 points a game so that shouldn't be too bad. It looks like they have more talent than in the past, that depth just isn't built yet. Jason played for shit last night and I think Marshall and Gorski have more upside than him. My biggest concern is that if Dalton is the third big off the bench we are going to be in trouble. Finally, I think Trey Washington was the pleasant surprise of the night. He showed he has grown a lot since freshman year and I think he will be a big part of the team this year.

exactly right, this is why i wasn't truly upset by losing to Ft Lewis, cuz the experience is dire with these youngens, and we took them to OT, ok, I'm really gonna like Marshall and Dalton, Gorski, it's gonna be what it's gonna be but I just want to be in the MWC race this year!!! we'll be ok, with some growing pains, but who isn't

My goals for the team as long as Shyatt is here will always be win the MWC and go to the Big Dance.

And you've been disappointed 4/5 years...

If I was an AFA fan should I have the same mantra? Or accept the facts that I'm not a fan of a team like SDS or UNLV or UNM? And maybe should accept reality that my team is quite a ways away from that lofty goal.

Similar, WYO had success with a senior heavy team and made the dance. But, I need to remember we are not Duke or UNC or Kentucky who can rebuild in a year and make it again, year after year.
We are not there as a program. But that should be our goal. To eventually become a program like that. So for now, I will accept reality and know we will rebuild and it will take a year or so to get back to those lofty goals.

Very much agree. Especially given where he came from, and how he started out here in Wyoming.

I don't think expectations are out of whack for basketball. Nobody is demanding a MW title or kick Shyatt to the curb. This is a young team...if they are much better at the end of the season than the beginning, that's a win. The MW isn't overly strong this fall...hoping for a top 5 finish isn't crazy. Not a given, but not lofty by any means.

This program is on the rise. It isn't the Gonzaga of the Rockies just yet...but it's on the rise.

You guys are idiots. The guy was a top-10 beat reporter at a D2 SCHOOL! That's a tremendous accomplishment. He has cranked out numerous bylines each and everyday and given us some truly great stories (ie Ethan Wood feature). He's also gone above and beyond giving us recruiting pages for each and every potential recruit. And he's been all over the basketball coverage.

Why don't you all stop complaining and just enjoy that the University of Wyoming has one of the best beat reporters in the nation!

especially when last year we knew we had the horses to get it done, but with the injury bugs etc....it started looking bleak, but went on that heavenly run in the tourney!!! It does help when we have a great coaching staff too!!!
it's gonna be a build mode here but I'm willing to be patient with this and excited to see their progress!!!

Now, why you gotta name call? LMAO! Top 10 beat reporter at a D2 school...I had to digest that for a second...that is so mediocre it shouldn't have even been mentioned.

Fact of that matter, he started out slow...and didn't really get it going until September. But that wasn't the point of the comment that cali2wyo made, or that I agreed with. The point was that he is becoming quite superior and lecturing at times with his comments toward how to be a fan. He needs to keep that garbage to himself. I was a Wyoming fan long before he arrived, and will be long after he is gone and doesn't give 2 shits about UW anymore.

I especially like this one he tweeted out to Wyo fans:

"Whatever you do, don't take Brian Hill for granted. He may be a once-in-a-generation running back."

Like any Wyoming fan is going to take Brian Hill for granted?

Thanks for the name calling, very convincing. And I sure hope you're being sarcastic. Top 10 at a D2 school? I think everyone's favorite poster here, Fonz, could earn that distinction if you gave him a typewriter.

And the point I was trying to make (as Peaches n' Cream already pointed out) wasn't to call the quality of his work into question. But rather his tactics of telling people how to be fans/what expectations should be held as bait for readership.

I'll admit, he's done some solid features and has improved upon things such as the recruiting tracker, as you pointed out. But I don't think I'm out of line when I say I don't appreciate someone telling me how to be a fan of Wyoming athletics (especially when that person is only invested in Wyoming short-term).

Then what the heck are you doing on this site? That's 90% of the posters in this place.
